For years, certificate falsification and fake academic records have been a major issue at the centre of how the National Youth Service Corps verifies and ascertains the academic qualifications and educational claims of graduates and prospective corps members. It is not uncommon for some shady Nigerians to illegally obtain tertiary education certificates without necessarily going through the rigours of the academic exercise needed to acquire them. On many occasions, these certificates have been presented to NYSC as a testament of academic excellence only to discover years later that they were fraudulently obtained.
To put an end to the inglorious and illegal practices, the NYSC has implemented a mechanism to combat the menace of fake certificates. The service has announced that no prospective corps member will be mobilised for national service without clearance from the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD). In a direct and assertive notice on its official X account on Monday, the scheme put it bluntly: “No NERD clearance, No NYSC!!!”
Prospective corps members have been urged to complete the process early, as the scheme intensifies preparations for the 2026 Batch B mobilisation. The tying of NYSC mobilisation to NERD Clearance is not a spontaneous or impractical order. It is a requirement that has been in the works since BATCH A.
Monday’s notice reads more like a firm reminder to those who may want to discountenance and scoff at the new requirement. But the timing, alongside NYSC’s separate warning against night travel to orientation camps, shows a scheme trying to have a firm grip and exert authority on the quality of characters it gives the nod to participate in the year-long scheme.
What Does NERD Do
NERD is a national database run by the Federal Ministry of Education. It stores digital copies of academic work such as final year projects, dissertations, theses and certificates.
Before now, a graduate’s paper qualifications moved from school to school, agency to agency, often with little central checks and supervision. Spurious and fake certificates and unverifiable project work passed through with ease. There was no system or mechanism in place to forestall this academic banditry. NERD comes to fix this institutional lacuna with one central, searchable record that NYSC, employers and even foreign embassies can scour to authenticate the veracity of any academic qualifications submitted to them.
Why Verification Matters
Every year, NYSC mobilises hundreds of thousands of graduates without the capacity and system to verify each certificate by hand. Unscrupulous characters have exploited this systemic and structural loophole for decades: Nigeria’s labour market and public institutions are replete with cases of forged degrees surfacing long after the damage is done. NERD puts an end to this scourge from the get-go. It filters out imposters. It sifts the grain from the chaff. You either have it or not. No room for shortcuts. A corps member’s academic record either exists and is available on the national database, or it does not. There is no in between. A graduate with questionable certificates cannot bypass the verification stage without getting flagged.
This matters because NYSC discharge and exemption certificates carry national weight across different social strata well beyond the service year and could, to a great degree, shape and influence the life trajectory of a graduate. For many Nigerian parents, it is a testament of how worthy a child is and how fruitful their training of the child turns out to be. For the government, it is evidence of patriotism and service of the fatherland, while for employers a proof that a graduate is who they claim to be.
A national service programme that mobilises people on the strength of unverified paper qualifications is, by extension, slamming its stamp of approval on credentials it has not thoroughly and meticulously authenticated. NERD clearance changes the game. With it, verification takes place, and fraud is eliminated before mobilisation to snuff out any future problems.

A scheme that cannot authenticate the originality of the educational certificates of those it is mobilising for national service does not have the moral ground to vouch for them afterwards. NERD clearance is how NYSC fixes the institutional loophole — by making sure the only people who reach orientation camp are graduates whose academic records are verified and can stand the test of public scrutiny.
