For years, Judy Austin’s name has been closely tied to Yul Edochie. Their relationship became one of Nollywood’s biggest controversies after Yul publicly introduced Judy as his second wife in April 2022.
But long before Yul became part of Judy’s public story, she was married to Emmanuel Chukwuobasi.
That marriage, which began in 2007, produced two children and eventually ended in a separation that both sides now describe very differently.
More than a decade later, the history of that relationship has returned to the public space. In June 2026, Obasi appeared on The HonestBunch Podcast and made a series of allegations about his former marriage, his children and Judy’s relationship with Yul.
Judy rejected his claims and announced that she would take the matter to court. She has now done so.
A writ of summons filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Judicial Division, lists Judy Austin Yul-Edochie as the claimant and Emmanuel Chukwuobasi as the defendant. Among her claims is ₦1 billion in general damages for alleged defamation, alongside demands for retraction, removal of the alleged defamatory statements, injunctions and other monetary damages.
To understand why the dispute has reached this point, it is necessary to go back to the marriage that existed before Yul Edochie.
Before Yul Edochie

Judy Austin, born Judith Uchechukwu Muoghalu, built her career in Nollywood as an actress, producer and entrepreneur. Before acting became her main focus, she worked as a commercial model and briefly explored music.
Her personal life, however, later became a much bigger part of the public conversation than her career. That happened years after her first marriage.
According to Emmanuel Obasi’s account, he and Judy traditionally married on November 3, 2007, when Judy was 19. He has said that he supported her financially during their marriage, including sponsoring her university education.
The ex-couple have two children together, Adaeze Chukwu Obasi and Chidera Chukwu Obasi. For a period, they lived as husband and wife, but the marriage eventually broke down.
That is where the two accounts begin to sharply diverge. The disagreement is not simply about why the marriage ended. It is also about when it actually ended, whether the traditional marriage remained valid after Judy left the home, and what happened between the separation and Judy’s eventual relationship with Yul.
Those questions now sit at the heart of the legal and public battle.
The Marriage That Ended — Or Didn’t?
Judy Austin says her marriage to Obasi ended in March 2013. When she responded to the allegations that resurfaced in 2026, she insisted that she had already left that relationship years before she met Yul. She shared the video of her response on her social media account.
Her account is straightforward: she says she first met Yul on a movie set in 2016, three years after her marriage had ended. In her words:
“I met Yul Edochie three years after my marriage ended. I met Yul Edochie on a movie set in 2016 for the very first time.”
Judy has also said that actor Sylvester Madu encouraged her to pursue acting in 2013, after her marriage to Obasi had ended.
Obasi’s account is different. He has acknowledged that Judy moved out of their home in December 2012, but he argues that leaving the house did not automatically end their traditional marriage.
According to his account, the marriage remained valid because Judy’s bride price had never been returned by her family. That distinction is important because it forms the basis of his argument about the timing of Judy’s relationship with Yul.
For Judy, she was already separated from Obasi before she met Yul. For Obasi, the traditional marriage had not been brought to an end in the manner he considered necessary.
It is this disputed timeline that has continued to fuel the accusations years later. And by 2026, Obasi was no longer discussing the matter privately. He took his version of events to a podcast watched by a large online audience.
The HonestBunch Interview That Reopened the Past
The dispute returned to the spotlight on June 15, 2026, when Emmanuel Obasi appeared on The HonestBunch Podcast. During the emotional interview, Obasi spoke about his marriage, his children and what he believes happened between Judy and Yul. At one point, reflecting on the pain of what happened, he asked:
“Sometimes I ask myself what offence one man could commit against another man in this world.”
But it was his allegations about Judy and Yul that generated the strongest reaction. Obasi claimed that Judy had admired Yul even before the two eventually became involved. He said Judy would watch Yul on television and praise his voice, which she allegedly said reminded her of her uncle.
He also claimed that Judy eventually told him she had met Yul. According to Obasi, Judy once returned home from school and told him that Yul, whom she identified as the son of veteran actor Pete Edochie, had asked why someone as beautiful as her was married to him. In his words:
“Judy came back home one day from school and asked me if I knew Yul. She told me Yul was the son of Pete Edochie and that he asked why a beautiful lady like her would be married to me.”
Obasi further claimed that Yul offered to become a family friend and assist them financially, but that he rejected the idea. He later presented these events as part of what he described as evidence that Judy and Yul were already developing a relationship while she was still living with him.
“I have four pieces of evidence showing that they were dating under my roof,” he claimed. Among the things he cited were Judy’s admiration for Yul, her account of meeting him and the alleged offer by Yul to become a family friend.
He also referred to what he described as a 2013 confrontation at a police station, where he claimed Judy told him:
“You are too small. Who are you to challenge Yul?”
Obasi also connected Judy’s alleged desire to relocate to Enugu, where Yul lived at the time, to his belief that the relationship between them had already begun.
The podcast interview also brought another long-running issue back into the discussion: the couple’s children. Obasi claimed that he had been denied access to his two children for more than a decade. He said he had not seen them since 2014 and last spoke with them by phone in 2017.
He accused Judy of deliberately keeping the children away from him and claimed that she had once vowed to frustrate him through the children because she knew how much he loved them.
Obasi went further in discussing his attempts to regain access to his children. He alleged that he hired two lawyers to help him pursue custody but claimed Judy slept with both lawyers and thereby compromised his efforts.
He also spoke about Judy’s education, saying he regretted financially supporting her university education and portraying himself as someone who had invested heavily in her future when she was a 19-year-old.
Another serious allegation concerned his safety. Obasi claimed that Judy and people around her had threatened to kill or “terminate” him for more than a decade to stop him from telling his story publicly.
Despite Judy’s denial, his podcast appearance nevertheless changed the nature of the dispute.
What had previously been a largely personal history between two former partners had become a fresh public confrontation, with millions of people now hearing Obasi’s version of events.
Judy responded soon after.
Judy Austin’s Version
On June 16, 2026, Judy Austin responded in a video posted on her Instagram page. She dismissed Obasi’s account and accused him of contradicting himself.
“Any smart and learned person who listens to this podcast will see and hear how he’s contradicting himself in everything he said. That’s because everything he said is a lie.”
Judy again rejected the suggestion that she was involved with Yul while married to Obasi.
She maintained that her marriage had ended in March 2013 and that she did not meet Yul until 2016, when they worked together on a movie set. She also challenged Obasi’s statements about their children.
“He said he doesn’t know where his kids are, so why is he still calling on Yul Edochie to release them when he doesn’t know if they’re with him?”
Judy further alleged that someone was sponsoring Obasi’s campaign against her. But one of the strongest parts of her response was her defence of Yul.
While Obasi presented Yul as someone who became involved in the collapse of his marriage, Judy presented him in a completely different light.
She accused Obasi of failing in his responsibilities as a father and described him as a “deadbeat father.” According to Judy, Yul stepped into the lives of her children and helped provide for them even though they were not his biological children.
“If anything, he has helped me take care of the kids that are not his biological kids.”
She said Yul had helped with their school fees, provided shelter and acted as a father figure to the children. For Judy, therefore, the story is not about a man taking another man’s family away. She says it is about a man who came into her life after her first marriage had ended and helped her raise her children.
That is the opposite of Obasi’s account. And with both sides publicly standing by their versions, Judy decided the next stage of the dispute should not be another social-media argument. It should be decided in court.
From Public Accusations to a ₦1bn Lawsuit
The legal escalation came in July 2026, when Judy filed a writ of summons against Emmanuel Chukwuobasi at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.
Screenshots of the writ was shared on Judy’s Instagram account on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The document lists Judy Austin Yul-Edochie as the claimant and Obasi as the defendant. The writ gives Obasi 30 days after service, inclusive of the day of service, to enter an appearance. It also states that the writ is to be served outside the Federal Capital Territory, specifically in Anambra State, where Obasi’s address is listed.
At the centre of the case is Judy’s claim for ₦1 billion in general damages for alleged defamation.
She is also asking the court to compel Obasi to publish a full and unreserved retraction and apology in at least two widely circulated national newspapers, as well as on all his social-media platforms.
Judy wants a perpetual injunction preventing Obasi, his agents and privies from publishing or circulating what she considers defamatory statements about her. She is also asking the court to order him to take down the alleged defamatory statements from his online platforms.
The financial claims go beyond the headline ₦1 billion. The writ also seeks ₦500 million in aggravated damages, based on the alleged repeated publication of defamatory statements over a prolonged period.
Another ₦500 million in exemplary damages is sought to mark what Judy’s legal team describes as the court’s disapproval of Obasi’s alleged deliberate and malicious conduct and to deter similar conduct.
The document also contains two separate cost claims: ₦50 million in one of the listed reliefs and ₦100 million in another.
Judy is additionally asking for 10 per cent post-judgment interest on monetary awards, or whatever rate the court considers appropriate, from the date of judgment until final payment.
These are claims made in the writ. They are not amounts the court has awarded to Judy. Obasi has also not been found liable for defamation merely because the suit was filed. The case is simply the beginning of a legal process, not its conclusion.
According to the details surrounding the case, Obasi was formally served with the writ on August 10, 2026. He recorded the encounter and reportedly made a mocking reference to receiving “the lawsuit and the law trouser.”
The matter is scheduled for September 29, 2026, when the legal battle is expected to move further into the courtroom.
For Judy, the move to court is a continuation of the position she expressed in June: that the claims should be tested through the legal system rather than through social media and public interviews.
Why the Past Still Matters
The legal battle between Judy Austin and Emmanuel Obasi is happening in 2026, but the story behind it goes back almost two decades.
Their traditional marriage dates to November 3, 2007, according to Obasi’s account. They have two children together. Judy says the marriage ended in March 2013, while Obasi maintains that the traditional marriage continued beyond the point when she left the home in December 2012 because, according to him, her bride price had not been returned.
Then comes 2016, the year Judy says she first met Yul Edochie on a movie set.
Six years later, in April 2022, Yul publicly introduced Judy as his second wife, turning their relationship into one of the most controversial stories in Nollywood because he was still married to May Yul-Edochie.
Since then, the focus has often been on Judy and Yul. But Obasi’s appearance on The HonestBunch Podcast in June 2026 shifted the spotlight backwards, to the marriage that existed before Yul entered Judy’s public story.
His allegations brought old questions about the marriage, the children and the timeline of the separation back into public discussion.
Judy’s response brought a completely different version of that history.
Now, those competing accounts have moved beyond interviews and Instagram videos.
They are at the centre of a defamation case before the High Court of the FCT.
The court will ultimately have to deal with the legal questions raised by the suit. Until then, the allegations about what happened between Judy and Obasi remain disputed accounts from two former spouses who remember the end of their marriage very differently.
What began as a marriage in 2007, became a separation years later and was eventually overshadowed by Judy’s relationship with Yul Edochie has now developed into a legal battle involving claims running into billions of naira.
And for the first time, the next chapter of the Judy Austin-Emmanuel Obasi story will be written not only in public statements, podcasts or social-media posts, but in court.
