Luis Enrique’s side open their defence at home to Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday, a fixture that looks straightforward on paper but comes with the usual health warning that attaches itself to any European opener. Behind PSG in the market sit a genuinely crowded chasing pack, Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are all bunched together in the odds, with Manchester City and Liverpool not far behind. This is arguably the most open fixture of the opening night. Real Betis are back in the competition’s league phase for the first time in years and bring a genuinely talented squad built around a fluid, possession-based approach, while Lille have quietly built one of the more competitive squads in Ligue 1 outside the traditional big two. Expect goals at both ends and very little to separate the sides on the night.

Real Madrid vs Inter Milan

The pick of the opening night’s fixtures. Real Madrid begin the José Mourinho second-stint era at the Santiago Bernabéu against an Inter side that remains one of the most battle-hardened outfits left in the competition. Mourinho knows Inter’s dressing room intimately from his own time in charge there, which cuts both ways, he understands their patterns better than most, but so do several of Inter’s senior players understand his. This should be a cagey, tactically absorbing contest rather than an out-and-out goal-fest, with Madrid’s home advantage and squad depth just about enough to nose it.

Barcelona vs Feyenoord

Barcelona at the Olympic Stadium remain one of the most watchable teams in Europe when their front line clicks, and Feyenoord, solid as they are domestically, do not have the squad depth to contain Barça’s rotation of attacking talent over 90 minutes. This looks like the kind of fixture where an early goal opens the floodgates.

Stuttgart vs Viking

Stuttgart’s return to Champions League nights at the MHPArena should be a comfortable evening’s work against a Viking side still adjusting to the physical demands of Europe’s top tier. The Norwegian champions have shown genuine quality in qualifying rounds in years past, but a first fixture against a well-drilled Bundesliga side on German soil is a big step up.

Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid

The pick of Wednesday’s fixtures, and arguably of the entire round. Arsenal go into this campaign as one of the bookmakers’ favourites after last season’s agonising penalty shootout defeat to PSG in the final, and Mikel Arteta’s side — built around the midfield partnership of Declan Rice and Bruno Guimarães and one of the tightest defensive units in Europe — will see this trip to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona as a genuine statement of intent. Napoli, however, will be fired up in front of their own fans and are never an easy side to break down at home in continental competition. Expect a tense, physical contest that could turn on a single moment of quality.

Fenerbahçe vs Roma

Fenerbahçe’s European nights at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium are renowned for their intensity, and a raucous home crowd will look to unsettle a Roma side still finding its feet under new-look personnel. One of the genuine intrigue fixtures of the round.
