There are some actors whose presence on screen becomes part of the memories of an entire generation. For many Nigerians, Olu Jacobs was one of them.
His voice, his commanding presence and the authority he brought to his roles made him a familiar face across theatre, television and film for decades. On Wednesday, September 16, 2026, that familiar name became the subject of an outpouring of grief after his family announced his death at the age of 84.
His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his passing in a joint statement on Instagram. The family described him as their husband, father, grandfather and uncle, and referred to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.”

RMD described Jacobs as an icon, pioneer and giant of Nigerian theatre and film whose talent, discipline and command of his craft helped shape the industry. But he made it clear that his personal memories went beyond Jacobs’ achievements on screen.
“To me, he was Uncle Jay,” RMD wrote.
He recalled how Olu Jacobs’ presence and return to Nigeria helped make the path easier for actors who came after him. RMD also reflected on what Olu Jacobs’ example meant to those working in the industry. He wrote:
“His return home, his commitment to the craft and the standard he set reminded us that there was a place for excellence, discipline and integrity in the work we had chosen to do.”
One of the most striking parts of the tribute came when RMD acknowledged the possible impact of Jacobs’ absence from Nigeria.
“I have said before that if Uncle had not returned home, many of us may not have become who we are today,” he said, adding, “That is the impact of his life. That is the magnitude of his contribution.”
But RMD did not want to remember only the actor.
“I want to remember the man,” he wrote, before listing him as the husband, father, friend and elder behind the roles, voice and remarkable career. He also sent his heart and prayers to Joke Silva, the children and the entire family.

Funke Akindele joined the growing list of stars mourning Jacobs with a brief but poignant message.
“May his soul rest in peace 🎥🎥” she wrote.
Though brief, the tribute from one of Nollywood’s biggest contemporary stars came as a reminder of the generational reach of Jacobs’ career.
Ini Edo: Forever in our hearts
Ini Edo also paid tribute to the veteran actor.
“Rest well Uncle! You will forever be in our hearts ❤️❤️❤️ 😇” she wrote. Her choice of “Uncle”echoed the personal way several younger actors referred to Jacobs in their tributes, rather than simply calling him a veteran or colleague.
Muyiwa Ademola: “Journey well LEGEND”
Yoruba actor and filmmaker Muyiwa Ademola, through his verified Instagram account, @authenticmuy, kept his tribute short.
“It’s time to rest. Journey well LEGEND 🕊️🤍.” he wrote.
The message captured one of the dominant themes running through the tributes: that Jacobs’ death marked the end of a remarkable journey, but not the end of his influence.
Enioluwa remembers an icon who inspired generations
Content creator and actor Enioluwa Adeoluwa offered one of the more detailed tributes in the comments.
“An icon goes home,” he wrote.
Enioluwa described Jacobs as someone who lived a beautiful life, “inspiring generations and laying the bedrock upon which so many of us now stand.”
He prayed that Jacobs’ legacy would live on and also turned his attention to the family, particularly Joke Silva.
“And especially for our Queen, Mama Joke Silva,” he wrote, describing her as Jacobs’ beloved wife and companion of many years. He prayed that God would give her strength and comfort during the difficult days ahead.
Empress Njamah paints a picture of the final curtain
Empress Njamah’s tribute took on the language of theatre, fitting for an actor whose career was deeply rooted in the stage.
“The Sage finally took an eternal bow from life’s theater,” she wrote.
She continued with an emotional image of the stage going quiet:
“The lights are out, the curtains are drawn, the stage is now empty, the golden voice we once adore will remain silent forever.”
Njamah described Jacobs as a “great thespian” and prayed for strength for his family.

Veteran actress Bukky Wright focused on the mark Jacobs left on those around him.
“You came, you conquered, and you left an unforgettable legacy in our hearts and on our screens,” she wrote.
She added that his light would continue to shine through the lives he touched before ending with:

Mr Macaroni calls him an inspiration
For Mr Macaroni, Jacobs was an “absolute Inspiration to us all.”
“Legend, Icon and an absolute Inspiration to us all!” he wrote.
The tribute was short, but it captured the way Jacobs’ career had become a reference point for younger performers.
Kehinde Bankole celebrates “a legendary legacy”
Actress Kehinde Bankole described Jacobs’ life as both beautiful and legendary.
“A beautiful life! A legendary legacy! A Peaceful rest. All is well,” she wrote before adding:

Deyemi Okanlawon remembers the family
Deyemi Okanlawon’s reaction was directed not only at Jacobs but also at the family left behind.

Actress Chisom Steve’s tribute was among the more personal comments.
