October 27 in History: Lagos Hosts First International Trade Fair

On October 27, 1962, Nigeria opened its first ever International Trade Fair at the Exhibition Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The fair, which will run for 23 days until November 18, was declared open amidst fanfare, bringing together exhibitors from across Nigeria and abroad.

The exhibition showcased a wide range of agricultural produce, locally manufactured industrial goods and international commerce, reflecting the aspirations of the young nation under its inaugural National Development Plan (1962-1968).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, officials said the fair is designed to promote made-in-Nigeria products, attract foreign investment and strengthen trade links between Nigeria and the rest of the world.

Traders, industrialists and members of the diplomatic community visited the fairground.
