Ebonyi to renovate rehabilitation center for persons with disabilities

Gov. David Umahi

The Ebonyi Government is planning to upgrade the state’s Rehabilitation Centre in order to improve skill assessment for people with disabilities.

Gov. David Umahi delivered the remarks on Friday in Abakaliki at an event commemorating the 2021 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with the theme “Leadership and Participation of Persons with Disabilities Toward An Inclusive, Accessible, and Sustainable Post COVID-19.”

Mr. Emmanuel Obasi, who represented Umahi, stated that the state government was committed to the well-being of people with disabilities.

He stated that he would not give up his efforts to pass the Disability Bill, which is currently being debated in the state House of Assembly.

Since 2015, Umahi has paid stipends to 87 physically challenged people (PCPs), according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Deborah Okah, stated that the state government had empowered 58 people with disabilities who graduated from its Rehabilitation Centre.

Okah stated that the rehabilitation center has the mandate to deploy life basic skills to Persons with Disabilities across the state in Bakery, Computer education, and other areas.

Tailoring, wood work (carpentry), bead making, shoe making, and hair dressing are among the others.

“Being disabled is not a negation, but a condition that creates an inner energy for these people to live and be economically viable to society and their families,” the commissioner stated.

“We must create a favorable environment for them to realize their physical and mental capacities.”
