The Rotary Club of Jos, District 9125, donated wheelchairs to 20 polio victims in Jos on Saturday. Jude Onwudiwe, the new president of the club presented the wheelchairs to the beneficiaries at the 50th anniversary of the club and his investiture.
He said that the donation aimed at cushioning the hardship the polio victims were facing and stressed that the wheelchairs would ease their mobility.
He explained that the donation was in observance of the objective of the Rotary Club to support humanity.
“Rotary is about touching lives; everyone deserves a long healthy life. Today, as part of my investiture and 50th anniversary of this club, we are donating wheelchairs to 20 polio victims”
“This is to help them to have a better life and enable them to put all their God-giving potentials into good use. This will make them become economically useful to themselves and to the society in general,’’ he said
Onwudiwe added that the club would donate mosquito nets and delivery kits to expectant mothers and provide toilet facilities in schools.
The president thanked members of the club for the confidence reposed in him to lead them.
He promised to lead with the fear of God and called on members to support and cooperate with him toward meeting the club’s mandate for the year.
In her farewell speech, the immediate past president of the club, Mrs Sarah Rotshak, thanked members for the support accorded her. She urged members to also support Onwudiwe to enable him to succeed.
She said that the club recorded some modest achievements during her tenure, including induction of new members and execution of notable projects.
“I want to use this opportunity to thank my fellow Rotarians for giving me the opportunity to serve. May we continue to synergise and collaborate for the sake of humanity,’’ she said.
Speaking at the event, Dan Majang, Plateau’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, commended the club for positively touching lives, particularly that of the less-privileged in the state. He represented Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau at the function.
Majang pledged the state government’s support for the club in order to continue with its good works and commended members for preaching equality, inclusiveness, peace and religious tolerance through their humanitarian services.
Awards of recognition were given to Gov. Lalong and other notable Nigerians for their humanitarian services at the ceremony.
The theme of the service year is: “Serve to Change Lives’’.
