Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has implemented an on-campus student job scheme that allows students to earn tokens in exchange for providing services to the institution.
Mr Lamara Garba, the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Public Affairs, announced this in a statement issued on Sunday in Kano.
Prof. Adamu-Abbas, the institution’s Vice Chancellor, who launched the scheme with the distribution of engagement letters to 125 students, stated that the scheme is part of his promise to improve students’ welfare.
He stated that the employees would be given various responsibilities such as monitoring/supervision of the university’s facilities, cleanliness, and menial tasks, among other things.
According to Garba, the VC stated that “each student will receive N15,000 monthly, subject to approval by his/her supervisor, after meeting the necessary requirements.”
The Vice Chancellor drew the attention of the students who are the first beneficiaries of the university’s protection scheme.
The Vice Chancellor also revealed that plans are in the works to establish a Student’s Skills Acquisition Center at the university, stating that when fully operational, the center would train students in entrepreneurial skills to make them self-sufficient upon graduation.
“The center, which will be free to any interested student, will allow students to learn various trades such as tailoring, make-up, beauty saloon, and others.”
“That will go a long way toward helping the students become self-sufficient, especially after graduation,” he said.
Prof. Mahmoud Umar-Sani, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Management Services, stated in his remarks that the scheme is the VC’s initiative, as he felt that the University should introduce a scheme that would ease the financial hardship of students through part-time jobs.
