Nigerian Senate house

The Senate passed a Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal University of Sports Nkalagu, Ebonyi on Tuesday.

The Upper Chamber also approved a bill to create the National Sports Commission.

The Bills were passed after Sen. Obinna Ogba (PDP-Delta) presented the report of the Senate Committee on Sports and Youth Development during plenary.

Ogba, who is also the chairman of the committee, stated that the university bill was read for the second time on Wednesday, May 19.

According to the lawmaker, the goal of the Bill was to encourage the advancement of learning and to provide the opportunity for all people, regardless of race, creed, gender, or political conviction, to obtain higher education in sports.
“To act as agents and catalysts for the effective and economical utilization, exploitation, and conservation of the country’s sports resources through post-graduate training, research, and innovation.”

“The Bill essentially seeks to establish a National Sports Commission to be charged with the responsibility of administering, encouraging, and developing sports and games throughout Nigeria,” Ogba said of the sports commission bill.
