On Sunday, ECOWAS leaders began deliberating on critical sub-regional and continental issues, including reports on political crises in Mali and Guinea Conakry.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), President Muhammadu Buhari hosted the meeting, which included President of Ghana and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, Nana Akufo-Addo.
President Faure Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo and President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger Republic are also in attendance.
President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea Bissau, President Julius Bio of Sierra Leone, and President Jose Maria Neves of Cape Verde are also there.
NAN noted that Cape Verde’s President Jose Maria Neves is attending the ECOWAS meeting for the first time.
The meeting also includes Presidents Adama Barrow of The Gambia and Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire, as well as Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan, ECOWAS Mediator on Mali.
The meeting is expected to discuss the ECOWAS 2021 Annual Report as well as the Report of the 47th Ordinary Meeting of the Mediation and Security Council.
It will also consider the Report of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers’ 87th Ordinary Session.
Another topic to be discussed is the Climate Declaration of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The meeting will also consider the appointment of an ECOWAS Champion for the return of cultural artifacts, as well as Ken Ofori-report Affa’s on the ECOWAS Single Currency Programme.
The Ministerial Committee on the Single Currency is chaired by Ofori-Affa.
According to NAN, winners of the ECOWAS Prize for Excellence are also expected to receive their awards at the event.
