The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, has urged corps members to respect the cultures and traditions of their host communities.
Ibrahim made the call while speaking to the 2021 batch “C” stream 11 corps members at the end of the orientation program on Tuesday in Mangu, Plateau.
Ms Caroline Embu, the State Coordinator for NYSC in Plateau, represented him.
He urged corps members to serve as ambassadors for the program by providing selfless service and to be instruments of unity in their host communities.
During their service year, the director-general also urged them to remain patriotic and hardworking.
He urged them to engage in community development activities that would be extremely beneficial to their host communities.
He also challenged them to take part in the post-camp Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development program (SAED) to learn a new skill.
According to Ibrahim, such proficiency will prepare them for self-development and service, which will improve their socioeconomic status after their service year.
He warned the corps members to avoid unnecessary and unauthorised journeys, particularly at night, and to avoid accepting free rides from strangers.
He also advised them to only board vehicles from authorized parking lots.
The director-general advised corps members to avoid getting involved in local politics and to avoid using social media for negative purposes.
He urged corps members to accept their assignments to various Local Government Areas in good faith.
The NYSC chief stated that management was collaborating with security agencies to ensure the safety and security of corps members.
