Minister receives committee report

The report of the 25-man Implementation and Advisory Committee for the Reform of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Nigeria was presented to the Minister of Defence, retired Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi, on Monday.

The report was presented to Magashi by the Chairman of the Committee, retired Maj.-Gen. Alwali Kazir, according to the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media and Publicity, Mohammad Abdulkadri, in an Abuja statement.

The minister assured the committee that he was ready to study the recommendations in order to improve service delivery and performance in the defense and security sector.

He thanked the committee for following the convening order, which resulted in a large volume of workable documentation.

Kazir, the Committee’s Chairman, revealed that 72 recommendations were derived from extensive consultations with stakeholders over the course of 75 days of brainstorming on the areas in need of reform.

Kazir went on to say that members of the committee did their best by putting their extensive experience to use in carrying out the assignment.

According to him, this resulted in recommendations that will convey the national desire for improved security architecture.

He thanked the minister for the opportunity to chair the committee, which was comprised of serving and retired senior military officers as well as top technocrats.

The minister established the committee on September 28 in order to fulfill his promise to reposition the defense sector to meet contemporary international standards and best practices.
