The Rotary Club International on Monday in Ilorin donated healthcare equipment and commodities to 10 selected local government areas of Kwara.
Presenting the items, Dr Khadijat Musah, the Assistant Governor of Kwara State Rotary Representative on Maternal and Child Health, said the organisation had been donating hospital equipment for about a year across the country.
According to her, the Rotary was also involved in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Environment, Peace and Conflict resolution, Education and Literacy, among others.
Musah said Rotary International was concerned about maternal and child mortality in the country, to reduce the high rate of death.
“Rotary is doing something laudable, it is utilising money from members all over the world to make a difference amongst the people.
“Rotary has impacted on polio reduction through awareness campaign and vaccines,” she said.
Musah noted that the organisation supported in the training of medical doctors, nurses and midwives which had impacted positively on mother and child health.
Dr Michael Oguntoye, the President of Rotary Club, Ilorin District 9125, also said that the organisation was involved in series of humanitarian activities across the world.
“Rotary is all about serving humanity, helping the needy and the indigent in the society,” he said.
He said that the donated health equipment would go a long way to help in the care of maternal and child health in the state.
Dr Ayinla Abubakar, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, who received the equipment commended the humanitarian gestures from Rotary International.
He noted that the organisation was putting smiles on the faces of the citizens through various interventions.
Abubakar observed the need to care for the indigent in the society, adding that failure to do so will create disruption in the social order.
Dr Oluwatosin Fakayode, the Director, Primary Health Care Development Agency of the state, noted that maternal and child mortality was high in the country, adding that the donation will contribute to the reduction in mortality rate.
He, therefore, pledged to ensure that the recipient LGAs made judicious use of the commodities and equipment.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the recipient LGAs include Asa, Oke-Ero, Oyun, Isin, Offa, Ekiti, Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Moro and Kaiama.
