Kano State Task Force Committee on Sanitation has commended the Yan Lemon fruit market in the metropolis on its maintenance of good environmental hygiene and protection of public health.
The task force chairman, Dr Kabiru Getso gave the commendation in Kano on Friday after monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in markets, offices and motor parks.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Alhaji Adamu Faragai, Getso stated that the effort of the market management in cleaning the environment was visible.
According to him, this is because the market generates a huge amount of waste due to the nature and quantity of fruits found in the place.
“It is inevitable to find waste at every time of the day, yet we commend the management’s efforts in discarding the waste at regular intervals.
“It came to our notice that they have an arrangement with Capegate, a waste management company on collection of waste generated in the market,’’ Getso said.
The chairman said that the government would make appropriate arrangements on proper utilisation of the generated waste.
Mr Ali Abubakar, the General Duty Manager, Capegate, expressed delight over the committee’s concern on public health.
Abubakar said that the company was doing its best to ensure best practices and pledged to ensure effective implementation of the waste management process.
The committee also visited a rice milling factory, UMZA, in response to a public plea following the factory’s release of dust into the atmosphere.
Residents of Tudun Yola area of the state earlier complained to the government about the environmental pollution.
Reacting to this, the committee said it would summon the company and the community to discuss the issue and find a lasting solution.
