Carpenter gets 3 months jail term for stealing cell phone

An Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced a 26-year-old carpenter, Joshua Godwin, to three months imprisonment for stealing the sum of N45,000 and a cell phone.

The Judge, Sani Umar, sentenced Godwin after he pleaded guilty to the offence and begged the court for leniency.

The judge, however, gave the convict an option of a N10,000 fine or in default serve a jail term of three months.

He warned him to desist from committing crime.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Abdullahi Tanko told the court that the convict who resides at Lugbe, Abuja, was charged with theft.

Tanko said the complainant, Tunde Lawal of Zamani village airport road, Abuja, reported the matter at Iddo police station on March 22 at about 7.30 p.m.

He said that the convict on the same day entered the complainant’s car as a passenger from Lugbe to Berger and stole his Tecno cell phone valued at N68,000 before alighting at Sauka bridge.

He said that the convict on the same day stole the sum of N45,000 from the complainant’s account domiciled in Guaranty Trust Bank.

He said during investigation, the complainant’s MTN SIM card was recovered from the convict.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provision of Section 287 of the Penal Code.
