What June 12 symbolises — Council Chairman

The Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr Samson Olatunde, says June 12 is an indelible watershed in the political annals of Nigeria.
Olatunde stated this in a Democracy Day message made available to newsmen in Badagry, on Sunday.
According to him, it symbolises the determination of all Nigerians to accomplish a stable society where citizens can freely attain their desired goals and life aspirations.
Olatunde described this as one of the many beauties of democracy which marks it out among all other forms of government ever initiated by men.
“Today, we are once again celebrating an indelible watershed in the political annals of our great nation.
“I congratulate the good people of this God’s Own Council, residents of Lagos and all well meaning citizens of Nigeria on this occasion of Democracy Day.
“Today marks the 29th anniversary of that historical day, and the 3rd anniversary since June 12 was officially designated to be celebrated annually as Democracy Day by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“As we celebrate this year’s Democracy Day anniversary, I want to seize this moment to admonish fellow citizens that the only way to sustain our hard earned democracy is to unanimously resolve not to allow the labour of the heroes of democracy go in vain.
“This can only be achieved by being committed to the success of the ongoing democratic process, and playing our parts as citizens in all ramifications.
“We all have a role to play in making our nation great again and we cannot afford to sit on the fence,” he said.
Olatunde said that the power to elect the preferred leadership to fix the myriad of economic and political challenges plaguing the country was in the hands of the people.
“We have no option but to utilise that power judiciously in the best interest of our country.
“As we march towards another democratic dispensation in 2023, it is imperative to stress that it is only a peaceful environment that can offer us the opportunity to safely exercise our voting right, and make the choice of leaders we desire.
“Violence breeds everything but progress and prosperity.
“I want to therefore urge you all to register for your voter’s cards and resist any temptation to embark on any act capable of disrupting the political process,” he said.
He wished the people many more fruitful and blissful celebrations.
