Talents discovery will reduce youth unemployment, says UNICAL VC

Prof. Florence Obi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, has called on government at all levels and corporate organisations to invest in talents discovery and development.

Obi made the call on Friday in Calabar during the 2022 International Youth Day Celebration held at the University of Calabar.

The event was organised by the University with support from Cross River state Government, and in partnership with international and local partners.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Mike Okom, the VC said talents can create jobs for the youths and reduce youth unemployment in the country.

According to her, the International Youth Day is unique because it helps to amplify the voices of the younger generation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme for the 2022 celebration is ‘Intergenerational Solidarity; Creating a World for All Ages’.

“The celebration of the International Youth Day is very unique because it draws attention on the challenges and difficulties facing the youths.

“The importance of youth in any country cannot be overemphasised. Nigeria has the crop of the most talented youths in the world.

“I want to use this medium to call on government at all levels and corporate organizations to explore ways of harnessing the potentials and talents of the youths,” she said.

The VC added that  “Most Nigerian youths have had some breakthroughs in technology, and others with special skills, but the government has failed to recognize them.

“Japan and South Korea are known for their strength in technology, this is because leaders of those countries have mastered the keys of harnessing the talents of the young people.”

Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria in Cross River, Mr Daniel Obo, said  the day was important because it affords them the opportunity to speak up and be heard.

Speaking, Dr Yakubu Aliyu, a representative from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), said the UN had many programmes targeted at youth development and growth.

Aliyu said UNFPA would continue to design programmes towards uplifting the standard and participation of youths in meaningful activities.

Also speaking, Mr Taofeek Adeleye, Prevention Programme Manager of AIDS Healthcare Foundation, said there was the need for young people to be empowered and mentored.
