Police arraign 2 men for allegedly poisoning thousands of fish

Police has arraigned two men, Sikiru Abideen, 52, and Kolawole Akintade, 54, in an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court Ibadan for allegedly poisoning 3, 700 fish on Monday.

The two men, Abideen and Akintade, whose residential addresses were not provided were charged by the police with conduct likely to cause breach of peace and cruelity to animal.

ASP Sikiru Ibrahim, the Prosecution Counsel, told the court that the defendants allegedly committed the offence on Nov. 4, at about 7. 15 a.m, at Oluyole area Ibadan.

According to Ibrahim, the defendants allegedly conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by using chemical suspected to be poison to kill the fishes in a pond.

He added that the defendants allegedly administered the chemical in the fish pond.

Ibrahim said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 249(d) and 495(d) of the Criminal laws of Oyo State, 2000.

However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Mrs T. B. Oyekanmi, the Magistrate, granted the defendants to bail in the sum of N200, 000 each and two sureties each in like sum.

The case was adjourned until Dec. 8 for hearing.
