Mrs. Emmanuelle Blatmann, a French Ambassador to Nigeria, on Friday scored the Nigerian Navy high in its bid to curb maritime insecurity, especially piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.<\/p>\n

During a courtesy visit to the Western Naval Command, Mrs. Blatmann said that this had contributed to boosting the nation\u2019s economic activities.<\/p>\n

This is contained in a statement signed by the Command\u2019s spokesperson, Commander Edward Yeibo.<\/p>\n

The ambassador said that her visit was a result of a recent bilateral agreement between the French President, Mr. Emmanuel Macron, and President Muhammadu Buhari<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She said it was to increase defense in Nigeria\u2019s maritime domain, \u201cparticularly naval cooperation in the fight against piracy and other forms of criminality in Nigeria Maritime Domain.<\/p>\n

\u201cI extol the increased cooperation between Nigeria and France since 2014 and assure that my tenure will work towards improving same,\u201d she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The former ambassador to Sudan recalled that President Buhari recently called on the international community to be more active and aggressive in maritime security response.<\/p>\n

She said she was looking forward to more collaboration through the European Union\u2019s (EU) Gulf of Guinea Maritime Security Strategy and Action Plan in 2022 when France would be in full control.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Western Naval Command\u2019s Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Rear Adm. Jason Gbassa has expressed gratitude to the French government for her continuous support to Nigerian Navy\u2019s fleet recapitalisation and reorganisation efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe training of personnel and joint naval exercises like Ex Grand African Nemo in the Gulf of Guinea has been of immense benefit<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is heartwarming that the French Government is committed to Nigeria\u2019s recapitalisation and training efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will be looking forward to an increased partnership when France takes over EU\u2019s leadership in 2022,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Gbassa said that Blatmann facilitated additional billets for technical training for Nigerian Navy personnel in Hydrography, Oceanography, and Cartography while onboard Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) LANA.<\/p>\n

The FOC said that since the arrival of the NNS LANA, the Nigerian Navy had deployed her in various missions such as oceanographic and hydrographic survey, search and rescue as well as patrols.<\/p>\n
