{"id":10234,"date":"2022-01-31T15:08:30","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T15:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=10234"},"modified":"2022-01-31T15:08:30","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T15:08:30","slug":"36-1m-cases-of-elephantiasis-treated-by-carter-centre-in-plateau-nasarawa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/01\/31\/36-1m-cases-of-elephantiasis-treated-by-carter-centre-in-plateau-nasarawa\/","title":{"rendered":"36.1m cases of elephantiasis treated by Carter Centre in Plateau, Nasarawa"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"color: #222222;font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol';font-size: 17px\">\n<p>The Carter Centre, an international non governmental organisation has successfully treated 36.1 million cases of Lymphatic Filariasis (elephantiasis), in Plateau and Nasarawa State.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/01\/30\/nigeria-to-review-guidelines-tackling-ntds-in-the-country\/\">Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Elephantiasis is a tropical disease caused by parasitic worms that are spread through mosquito bites.<\/p>\n<p>The skin gets thick and hard, resembling an elephant\u2019s skin.<\/p>\n<p>Carter Center\u2019s Director of Integrated Health Progrommes Plateau, Nasarawa and Ebonyi state, Dr Abel Eigege disclosed this latest development on Sunday in Seri, Kanke Local Government of Plateau to commemorate the 2022 World \u00a0NTD Day.<\/p>\n<p>The director said that the centre also successfully carried over 10, 000 surgeries\u00a0 of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), (swelling in the legs, arms and genitalia).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of our success story, we interrupted the transmission of Guinea Worm in 2008, we successfully eradicated and in\u00a0 2013 Nigeria was\u00a0 certified Guinea Worm free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started the Oncho programme in 1992, by 2017, we interrupted the transmission and we eliminated the transmission last 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a major milestone a major milestone in the sense that Plateau and Nasarawa states are the only states that have eliminated\u00a0onchocerciasis (river blindness), they are also the only states that have eliminated Lymphatic Filariasis (elephantises).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may interest you to know that Nigeria has the highest body of onchocerciasis\u00a0 (river blindness) in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo if you can eliminate the transmission in any place, it gives a pointer that is possible to eliminate it. It gives hope. I know Carter Center boosts hope and it also deals with diseases,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On the NTD World Day , he said, the 2022 theme is: \u201cAchieving heath equity to end the neglect of poverty- related diseases\u2019 was to celebrate the success stories of the centre.<\/p>\n<p>He commended government for\u00a0 human resource support by allowing their staff to assist the center in carrying its interventions.<\/p>\n<p>Eigege however, said that the money used for the intervention in the field have been largely due to donor support to the centre.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, Mr Philemon Dagwa, Plateau NTD Coordinator lauded the centre for its interventions that saved many lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter Centre \u00a0has been been working\u00a0 on the Plateau for more than two decades, and so many diseases have been eradicated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment had been driving the system by making available their staff to support Carter Centre,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Elizabeth Jerl, a patient being treated for elephantises, appreciated Carter Centre \u00a0for coming to her aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI \u00a0could hardly walk before now but with the treatment, I can move around,\u201dshe said.<\/p>\n<p>She, however, appealed to the center to make available more drugs to them on regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that the people in Seri came out in their numbers with different cultural dances to celebrate the day.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that the World Health Organisation (WHO) says 859 million people in 50 countries worldwide remain threatened by lymphatic filariasis and require preventive chemotherapy to stop the spread of this parasitic infection.<\/p>\n<p>It said Lymphatic filariasis can be eliminated by stopping the spread of infection through preventive chemotherapy with safe medicine combinations repeated annually.<\/p>\n<p>The world health body said elimination of lymphatic filariasis is possible by stopping the spread of the infection through preventive chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Carter Centre, an international non governmental organisation has successfully treated 36.1 million cases of Lymphatic Filariasis (elephantiasis), in Plateau and Nasarawa State.
