{"id":10599,"date":"2022-02-02T15:07:57","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T15:07:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=10599"},"modified":"2022-02-02T15:07:57","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T15:07:57","slug":"who-issues-stern-warning-of-physical-mental-risks-to-teleworkers-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/02\/who-issues-stern-warning-of-physical-mental-risks-to-teleworkers-health\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO issues stern warning of physical, mental risks to teleworkers\u2019 health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/24\/who-sends-life-saving-items-to-key-hospital-in-afghanistan\/\">World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/a> on Wednesday warned of risks of teleworking for physical health, such as back pains and mental health, such as social isolation, constant stress and loneliness.<\/p>\n<p>WHO made this known in a technical brief on healthy and safe telework.<\/p>\n<p>In the brief, WHO highlighted that prolonged computer work in the remote mode may result in musculoskeletal injuries and eye strain, affecting the mental health of teleworkers by contributing to stress.<\/p>\n<p>It said while predicting that the trend would continue post-pandemic as employees strive to hone in on its benefits.<\/p>\n<p>It noted that \u201cwhen properly organised and supported, telework may have positive impacts on workers\u2019 physical and mental health and social well-being.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, when the health and safety risks of teleworking are not prevented and workers cannot make healthy choices while teleworking, such work can have significant negative impacts on health.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Among other physical risks, WHO underlined thermal discomfort, lighting and electrical safety, and air quality at workers\u2019 homes.<\/p>\n<p>While WHO stressed that mental health risks strongly depend on individuals\u2019 working preferences, it warned of possible social isolation, a higher incidence of loneliness, worry and guilt.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO study also showed that working from home resulted in an increased number of conflicts between family members and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>Among psychosocial risks, WHO underlined a work pace, longer working hours, and stress-inducing situations when it is more difficult for workers to understand tasks at hand due to a lack of communication.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, teleworking puts workers at a higher risk of cyberbullying by colleagues, supervisors, or clients.<\/p>\n<p>WHO and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) called for crucial changes to protect employees\u2019 health and to mitigate increasing risks of anxiety and stress while teleworking.<\/p>\n<p>People would likely continue working from home after the COVID-19 pandemic, given that employees and workers have seen the benefits of the new realm.<\/p>\n<p>WHO and ILO have suggested providing adequate working equipment, guidelines and training to reduce psychosocial and mental health impact, distance leadership and health promotion.<\/p>\n<p>The organisations also called for sufficient rest days for employees and the \u201cright to disconnect,\u2019\u2019 meaning that workers cannot be disturbed by employers while off work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday warned of risks of teleworking for physical health, such as back pains and mental health, such as social isolation, constant stress and loneliness.
