{"id":10742,"date":"2022-02-05T07:11:19","date_gmt":"2022-02-05T07:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=10742"},"modified":"2022-02-05T07:11:19","modified_gmt":"2022-02-05T07:11:19","slug":"businessman-in-court-for-alleged-n4m-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/05\/businessman-in-court-for-alleged-n4m-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Businessman in court for alleged N4m fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> A 40-year-old businessman, Theophilus Alaba, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates\u2019 Court for allegedly obtaining N4 million under the pretext of supplying wood. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Alaba, whose residential address is unknown, is facing charges of obtaining money under false pretences and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/04\/22-year-old-suspected-internet-fraudster-docked-over-alleged-forgery-stealing\/\"> stealing.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The police prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court the defendant committed the offences on Aug. 11, 2021, at Obawole, Ogba, Lagos State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He said the defendant fraudulently obtained the money from one Mr Clement Ojike, under the pretext of supplying his company 24 tonnes of black wood, a representation he knew to be false.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe defendant induced the complainant, who is one of the directors of OG Evergreen International Ltd., to deposit N4 million into his account. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">He promised to supply the goods within two weeks which he never did.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen the efforts made to get the goods or retrieve the money proved unsuccessful, the complainant reported the case leading to the arrest of the defendant,\u201d the prosecutor said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to him, the offences contravene sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years\u2019 jail term for stealing, while section 314 attracts 15 years for obtaining money under false pretences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Following his not guilty plea, Magistrate Mrs A.O Layinka released the defendant on bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Layinka said the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years\u2019 tax payment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/21\/infrastructural-projects-lagos-state-government-signs-n137-3bn-bond-issuance\/\">Lagos State Government (LASG).<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The magistrate fixed a further hearing for March 2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 40-year-old businessman, Theophilus Alaba, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates\u2019 Court for allegedly obtaining N4 million under the pretext of supplying wood.
