{"id":11081,"date":"2022-02-07T15:34:33","date_gmt":"2022-02-07T15:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=11081"},"modified":"2022-02-07T15:34:33","modified_gmt":"2022-02-07T15:34:33","slug":"sylvester-oromoni-media-public-barred-from-coroner-inquest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/07\/sylvester-oromoni-media-public-barred-from-coroner-inquest\/","title":{"rendered":"Sylvester Oromoni: Media, public barred from coroner inquest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Journalists and other members of the public were on Monday barred from proceedings of an Ikeja Coroner\u2019s Court unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/02\/inquest-doctor-says-sylvester-oromoni-was-not-taken-to-hospital-before-his-death\/\"> Sylvester Oromoni<\/a>, a 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Coroner, Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri, ordered journalists and other members of the public out of the court because the deceased\u2019s sister, a minor, was slated to testify.<\/p>\n<p>The minor came with her father, Mr. Sylvester Oromoni Snr., who is also slated to testify.<\/p>\n<p>Invoking Section 191 of the Child Rights Law of Lagos State, the Coroner said: \u201cProceedings will be held privately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers of the press and the general public are hereby excused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, when the minor entered the witness box, counsel to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/01\/17\/jega-cautions-nass-against-overriding-buhari-over-electoral-act-amendment-bill\/\">Nigerian Bar Association (NBA),<\/a> Mr. Bernard Oniga, requested that the press and other members of the public leave the court.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour honor, I will like to bring to your attention Section 191 of the Child Rights Law of Lagos State, which pertains to the protection of the privacy of a child during proceedings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA minor needs to be protected from undue publicity or the process of labeling as well information that may lead to identification.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis matter has been highly sensationalized. Any minor that so wishes to appear before it must be accorded some level of privacy because she still has a future ahead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Godwin Omoaka (SAN), counsel to one of the accused students of Dowen College, agreed with Oniga\u2019s submission.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that it was alleged that the 12-year-old Oromoni died on Nov. 30, 2021, from injuries sustained in an attack by five senior students of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/07\/dowen-college-death-kogi-govt-condemns-act-charges-schools-with-child-rights-protection\/\">Dowen College<\/a> for refusing to join a cult.<\/p>\n<p>It was also alleged that he was forced to drink an obnoxious substance by his attackers.<\/p>\n<p>Advice from Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions released on Jan. 4, however, disputed the allegations, stating that two autopsies revealed the student\u2019s cause of death as acute bacterial pneumonia due to severe sepsis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Journalists and other members of the public were on Monday barred from proceedings of an Ikeja Coroner\u2019s Court unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lagos.
