{"id":11373,"date":"2022-02-09T15:10:52","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=11373"},"modified":"2022-02-09T15:10:52","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:10:52","slug":"uk-health-minister-apologises-for-continuing-meeting-despite-positive-covid-19-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/09\/uk-health-minister-apologises-for-continuing-meeting-despite-positive-covid-19-test\/","title":{"rendered":"UK health minister apologises for continuing meeting despite positive COVID-19 test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A health minister in Britain has apologised for continuing with a face-to-face meeting in spite of being told that she had tested positive for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/09\/kogi-health-agency-denies-cash-for-covid-19-vaccination-allegation\/\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gillian Keegan said she was told her test was positive while meeting three men who had lost their daughters to suicide.<\/p>\n<p>She said she should have immediately ended the meeting, and described not doing so as a mistake and an error of judgment.<\/p>\n<p>The Chichester MP said she had told the men the result of the test but stayed on to hear their stories while taking further precautions.<\/p>\n<p>Posting on Twitter on Tuesday night, Ms Keegan said: \u201cEarlier today, ahead of a planned visit I took a precautionary (sic) LFD test which gave a positive result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am now isolating at home and fortunately feel fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was told my test was positive I was listening to three fathers who had tragically lost their daughters to suicide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told them the result and took further precautions but with their consent, I stayed for a short period to hear their stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have immediately ended the meeting and on reflection, this was an error of judgment on my part.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fully recognise the importance of following the letter and spirit of the policies, so want to be upfront about what happened and to apologise for the mistake I made.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The NHS website encourages people to do rapid lateral flow tests on days they are more likely to catch or spread the virus, for example, when mixing with people in crowded indoor places.<\/p>\n<p>In the event of a positive test result, the NHS website says: \u201cYou must self-isolate immediately.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Health Secretary Sajid Javid has accepted Ms Keegan\u2019s apology and continues to support her in her role.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Mr Javid said: \u201cThe Secretary of State has spoken with the minister, who has taken responsibility for her actions and made a full apology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe accepts her apology and continues to support her in her role.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Fellow health minister Ed Argar told ITV\u2019s Good Morning Britain programme on Wednesday morning: \u201cI saw that Twitter thread, I think, late last night, I think it was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s clearly issued a fulsome apology there that she did make an error of judgment. She was open about that and she accepted she made an error of judgment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand, I haven\u2019t spoken to or seen Gillian yesterday or today. So I don\u2019t know first hand \u00a0but I understand from her Twitter thread that she set out the circumstances and apologised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that she has also spoken to and apologised to the Secretary of State, who has accepted that apology.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Ms Keegan had talked about British people doing the \u201cright thing\u2019\u2019 when it comes to Coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>In November last year, she was asked how new rules around wearing face coverings on public transport would be enforced.<\/p>\n<p>Keegan told BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme: \u201cWell, largely due to the good sense, British people will hopefully listen to the rules, try to protect each other, and do what the right thing is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s largely what\u2026 how it\u2019s always been.
