{"id":11950,"date":"2022-02-15T07:24:34","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T07:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=11950"},"modified":"2022-02-15T07:24:34","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T07:24:34","slug":"who-lauds-historic-initiative-on-vaccine-equity-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/15\/who-lauds-historic-initiative-on-vaccine-equity-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO lauds \u2018historic initiative\u2019 on vaccine equity in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/02\/who-issues-stern-warning-of-physical-mental-risks-to-teleworkers-health\/\">World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/a> Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, has commended the initiative of establishing mRNA vaccine technology transfer Hub in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Ghebreyesus told a COVID-19 global action meeting on Monday that the \u201chistoric initiative comes at a critical time\u201d in the global fight against the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve just returned from South Africa yesterday (Sunday), where I met with President Ramaphosa and saw first-hand the progress underway,\u201d Ghebreyesus told the virtual COVID-19 Small Group Minister Meeting hosted by the U.S. Department of State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commitment from the government and the private sector is real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The WHO chief warned that high vaccine coverage in some countries, combined with the lower severity of the Omicron variant is driving a false narrative that the pandemic is over.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, low vaccine coverage and low testing rates in other states are creating ideal conditions for new variants to emerge, he warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can bring the pandemic under control this year \u2013 but we are at increased risk of squandering that opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 116 countries are off track to reach the global target of vaccinating 70 per cent of every country\u2019s population by the middle of this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the ACT Accelerator and the COVAX pillar and our partnership with UNICEF, we are now overcoming some of the supply and delivery constraints we faced last year, with more than one billion vaccine doses shipped.<\/p>\n<p>However, he added that in many countries, \u201cthe issues are not primarily a problem of absorptive capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to urgently support political leaders to accelerate the rollout of vaccines,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>While welcoming the ongoing engagement of those nations attending the meeting, the lines of effort proposed by the United States, and the continued alignment of the ACT Accelerator with the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT), he made three requests.<\/p>\n<p>First, he urged universal support for WHO\u2019s 70 per cent global vaccination target.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, to save lives now, he implored every country to \u201ccontribute their fair share\u201d to fully fund the ACT Accelerator \u2013 especially $16 billion for immediate needs.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, the WHO chief requested support for models, such as the mRNA technology transfer hub in South Africa and its \u201cnetwork of spokes around the world\u201d, to build capacity for controlling COVID-19 and other preventable diseases.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke again of the collaborative work he witnessed at the Hub and how vaccine developers were participating in the historic effort, naming Afrigen, Biovac, and the Biomedical Research Institute at Stellenbosch University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFostering local vaccine manufacturing capacity throughout the globe, supplemented by temporary intellectual property waivers for COVID-19 tools, will help bring this pandemic to an end and keep us all safer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>By working together, across the public and private sectors, he held that the pandemic could be brought under control while driving an inclusive and sustainable recovery.<\/p>\n<p>He threw his support behind U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken\u2019s recommendations to get more shots into more arms more quickly and strengthen supply chains, while providing access to clear information, training and equipment for all health workers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, has commended the initiative of establishing mRNA vaccine technology transfer Hub in South Africa.
