{"id":13424,"date":"2022-02-28T16:03:13","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T16:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=13424"},"modified":"2022-02-28T16:03:13","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T16:03:13","slug":"soft-drinks-bad-for-childrens-health-dentist-issues-stern-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/28\/soft-drinks-bad-for-childrens-health-dentist-issues-stern-warning\/","title":{"rendered":"Soft drinks bad for children\u2019s health \u2013 Dentist issues stern warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">A dentist, Dr Folashade Adeleye, has said that high intake of soft drinks is detrimental to children\u2019s oral health and general wellbeing.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Adeleye stated this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ibadan.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, soft drinks, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/01\/31\/nafdac-calls-for-more-support-for-herbal-medicine-development\/\">aerated drinks,<\/a> contain high sugar which become addictive for children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoft drink consumption is one of the several leading causes of tooth decay in children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of their high sugar content, carbonation and acids, soft drinks can weaken tooth enamel and encourage the growth of bacteria that contribute to tooth decay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is because sugar is the primary food source of the bacteria responsible for causing tooth decay and gum disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo much soft drinks with high sugar content and acidity are not only detrimental to children\u2019s oral health but also their general health,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Adeleye advised parents to limit the amount of soft drinks they give to their children, while also ensuring that they cultivated good oral hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMothers should not be giving their children everything, just because they cry for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if you cannot eliminate soft drinks completely, you can limit the amount they consume. You can even make soft drinks a treat, and not something that should be part of every meal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should encourage your children to drink more milk or water on daily basis, and save the soft drinks for special occasions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The dentist also advised parents to help their children cultivate good oral hygiene practices early in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDental hygiene should begin early in life. Parents should teach their children the importance of brushing twice a day, morning and before going to bed, after all the eating and drinking had been done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealthy teeth are important to children\u2019s overall health.
