{"id":13736,"date":"2022-03-03T14:37:47","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T14:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=13736"},"modified":"2022-03-03T14:37:47","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T14:37:47","slug":"nigeria-needs-5bn-dollars-annually-to-meet-contraceptive-needs-sogon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/03\/nigeria-needs-5bn-dollars-annually-to-meet-contraceptive-needs-sogon\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria needs 5bn dollars annually to meet contraceptive needs &#8211; SOGON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologists, Prof. Christopher Aimakhu, says that in order to meet women\u2019s need for contraceptive products, it would cost the country five billion dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Aimakhu said this during the three-day training on Sexual and Reproductive Health for media practitioners in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the training was organised by the Rotary Action Group for Reproductive, Maternal and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/23\/lafiya-kdsg-integrates-early-child-development-with-adolescent-sexual-reproductive-health\/\">Child Health (RMCH).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFully meeting women\u2019s needs for both contraceptive services and maternal and newborn health care in Nigeria would cost a total of\u00a0 five billion dollars each year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is roughly the same cost as meeting the need for maternal and newborn care alone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Aimakhu, who is the Secretary General Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), said that the budgetary allocation for family planning dropped from N1.2 billion to N300 million\u00a0 in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>According to him decreasing allocations for family planning and consistent delay in release of family planning funds contributes to the low percentage of family planning uptake in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>He said that investment in family planning would improve quality of care for current users and coverage for new users.<\/p>\n<p>He said that family planning was an important tool in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, reduced child and maternal mortality and unsafe abortions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf unmet need for modern contraception in Nigeria were satisfied, unintended pregnancies would drop by 77 per cent from 2.5 million to 555,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result, the annual number of unplanned births would decrease from 885,000 to 200,000 and the number of abortions would drop from 1.3 million to 287,000,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Aimakhu called for collaborative efforts of all stakeholders including not for profit organisations and civil society organisations to improve family planning access and uptake.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologists, Prof. Christopher Aimakhu, says that in order to meet women\u2019s need for contraceptive products, it would cost the country five billion dollars.
