{"id":15016,"date":"2022-03-17T20:51:36","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T20:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=15016"},"modified":"2022-03-17T20:51:36","modified_gmt":"2022-03-17T20:51:36","slug":"edo-commissioner-recounts-gains-of-reform-in-basic-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/17\/edo-commissioner-recounts-gains-of-reform-in-basic-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Edo Commissioner recounts gains of reform in basic education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"page\" class=\"site grid-container container hfeed\">\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"site-content\">\n<div id=\"primary\" class=\"content-area\">\n<article id=\"post-106896\" class=\"post-106896 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-education\">\n<div class=\"inside-article\">\n<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Edo Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe, says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/20\/kaduna-govt-bans-social-gathering-in-school-environment\/\">basic education reform<\/a> in the state has improved the literacy and numeracy of pupils in public schools.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Osa-Oviawe made this claim on Thursday in Benin while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The commissioner said that the reform tagged \u201cEdo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) 1.0\u201d, which was launched in 2018 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/12\/groom-10000-athletes-in-the-next-five-years-obaseki-tasks-edo-sports-commission\/\">Gov. Godwin Obaseki&#8217;s<\/a> administration, was very holistic in its process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Osa-Oviawe said the reform covered all areas of management of the education system; building the capacity of the non-teaching staff that managed the education system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">According to her, over 11,000 teachers in the state were trained on pedagogy and provided with tablets for effective teaching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Osa-Oviawe said that in Edo today, kids in Early Child Care Development Education (ECCD) III through the primary 1-3 classes could read effectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The commissioner said this was a sharp contrast to the situation at the inception of the reform, where pupils in primary 6 could hardly read.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cBefore we started EdoBEST, we did pupils diagnosis, and discovered that time, that a lot of our kids were behind grade level. Some were in primary 6 and did not know how to read,\u201d Osa-Oviawe said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">She said that the reform had resulted in positive impacts on literacy as a result of the huge investment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cWe have also standardized the lesson plan. Prior to the EdoBEST 1.0, every teacher in our primary school system wrote his\/her lesson plan and it was never clear whether those lesson plans conformed with the dictate of the national curriculum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cSo, by centrally designing a lesson plan for every class level, it became clear that we are able to standardize quality and ensure that the curriculum is covered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cBy introducing technology, we are able to track teachers\u2019 attendance, track their preview; how much time they spent reviewing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cThis is because a teacher who is not prepared cannot teach effectively and that helps a great deal to sanitize our system. Technology also removed the human factors to a large extent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cWith the introduction of this technology, I can put on the dashboard in my office and see school by school, teacher by teacher, who is in school and who is not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cSo the decision about sanctioning of a teacher is no longer reliant on the report of the head of the school; it comes from my office, and the governor also has access to the dashboard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cThe governor used that to summon me in the past to ask some specific questions about a school. Because teachers are now more in schools, they are now teaching more; pupils are also now coming to schools because school is becoming more exciting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cTeachers were taught new classroom management techniques; a new method of pedagogy; delivery method at emboldening, empowering and transforming the learners,\u201d Osa-Oviawe said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The commissioner, who is a former Executive Chairman of the state Basic Education Board (SUBEB) stated that the reform had been expanded to junior secondary education due to its success.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Edo Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe, says the basic education reform in the state has improved the literacy and numeracy of pupils in public schools.
