{"id":15024,"date":"2022-03-18T07:10:39","date_gmt":"2022-03-18T07:10:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=15024"},"modified":"2022-03-18T07:10:39","modified_gmt":"2022-03-18T07:10:39","slug":"pay-tax-for-developmental-needs-institution-tasks-nigerians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/18\/pay-tax-for-developmental-needs-institution-tasks-nigerians\/","title":{"rendered":"Pay tax for developmental needs &#8211; Institution tasks Nigerians\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"page\" class=\"site grid-container container hfeed\">\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"site-content\">\n<div id=\"primary\" class=\"content-area\">\n<p>The African Heritage Institution (Afri-Heritage), Enugu, has called on Nigerians to pay their taxes in order to meet developmental and transformational needs of the country.<\/p>\n<article id=\"post-107298\" class=\"post-107298 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-economy\">\n<div class=\"inside-article\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Executive Director of Afri-Heritage, a non public institution, Prof. Ufo Okeke-Uzodike, made the call in Enugu on Thursday while briefing newsmen on the forthcoming Big Ideas Podium Conference.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Okeke-Uzodike noted that the forthcoming conference with the theme: \u201cTaxation and Accountability: Why Should Nigerians Pay Tax?\u201d would be held on Thursday, March 24, both virtually and physically at the institution\u2019s auditorium in Enugu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said that governments at all levels could do little without the people being so patriotic to ensure they paid their taxes as and when due especially \u201cpaying the accurate amount\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The executive director noted that those running the government would not use their personal resources to fund development efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to him, Nigeria has the lowest Tax to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/23\/nigeria-remains-africas-largest-economy-with-over-n400bn-in-gdp\/\">Gross Domestic Product (GDP)<\/a> ratio among African countries and many Nigerians\u2019 attitude to paying tax is just negative.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have about 77 million people in Nigeria doing one business or the other; while only about 10 million people actually pay their taxes in the country.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven some formalised organisations and government offices are not paying taxes and most that do pay are under-paying (not paying commensurate taxes),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He urged governments at all levels to ensure transparency and accountability in the issue of tax payment adding that social amenities needed to be provided so that the people could feel the impact of their taxes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an urgent need for all to pay their taxes. However, there is a greater need to be transparent, accountable and make judicious use of the tax resources for the betterment of citizens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the forthcoming conference, Okeke-Uzodike noted that Afri-Heritage as a think tank and advocacy institution wanted to find evidence-based solutions to the socioeconomic and sociopolitical issues surrounding \u201cWhy Should Nigerians Pay Tax?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said that the institution had gathered the best of human resources that had the know-how and experience on tax issues spanning decades to speak on the matter and proffer way forward.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr Mark Abani, Founder\/CEO MSCA Projects, Mr Emmanuel Obeta, formerly with Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr Nnaemeka Eloike and Mr Gerald Ugochukwu among others to do justice to the discourse of the conference,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The African Heritage Institution (Afri-Heritage), Enugu, has called on Nigerians to pay their taxes in order to meet developmental and transformational needs of the country. &nbsp; The Executive Director of Afri-Heritage, a non public institution, Prof. Ufo Okeke-Uzodike, made the call in Enugu on Thursday while briefing newsmen on the forthcoming Big Ideas Podium Conference.
