{"id":15350,"date":"2022-03-21T16:27:32","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T16:27:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=15350"},"modified":"2022-03-21T19:52:18","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T19:52:18","slug":"endsars-panel-orders-sp-chinedu-okonkwo-to-appear-march-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/21\/endsars-panel-orders-sp-chinedu-okonkwo-to-appear-march-24\/","title":{"rendered":"#EndSARS panel orders SP Chinedu Okonkwo to appear March 24"},"content":{"rendered":"<article id=\"post-113304\" class=\"post-113304 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-judiciary author_contact-3331\">\n<div class=\"inside-article\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>An Independent Investigation panel has ordered SP Chinedu Okonkwo of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/09\/court-fixes-march-23-to-hear-fgs-request-to-extradite-abba-kyari\/\">Intelligence Response Team (IRT)<\/a>, Special Tactical Squad, Abuja to appear before it on March 24.<\/p>\n<p>The order was in connection with an allegation of unlawful arrest, detention, and enforced disappearance of Ebuka Aniegu in May 2019 in a petition marked 2020\/IIP-SARS\/ABJ\/202.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents in the matter are DSP Paul Odey, Officer Commanding (OC) IRT, Tactical Squad, Abuja, OC Defunct SARS, Abuja, Commissioner FCT, and the Inspector-General of Police.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/11\/25\/nhrc-receives-814-human-rights-violation-cases-in-bauchi-state\/\">National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)<\/a> panel is investigating alleged human rights abuses by the defunct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/11\/24\/panel-adjourns-its-sitting-on-an-alleged-extrajudicial-killing\/\">Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS)<\/a> and other police units.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Garba Tetengi, SAN, who represented the chairman, retired Justice Suleiman Galadima, gave the order after the first respondent; Odey mentioned his name as his team leader. He then adjourned until March 24 for a continuation of defense.<\/p>\n<p>The petitioner, \u00a0Nnenna alleged that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/21\/police-rescue-alleged-kidnappers-from-jungle-justice-in-oyo\/\">police<\/a> killed her younger brother, Aniebu who was arrested in May 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Malik Taiwo, the first respondent led in evidence by the respondent\u2019s counsel, SP Paul Odey told the panel that his team led by \u00a0Okonkwo investigated the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Odey said the team responded to a complaint by Peter Ogunmola and nine others alleging that they were attacked by armed robbers in Lugbe, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He said during the police tracked a phone left behind during the crime to one Tochukwu Out, who was later identified as Aniegu.<\/p>\n<p>Odey said the matter was later transferred to DSP John Onyema, who died in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The panel directed that his death certificate be brought before it.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ifeanyi Agu, counsel to the petitioner, during cross-examination, told the panel that what Odey said contradicts what he said during the sitting of the panel.<\/p>\n<p>When asked by the panel, how long the victim was in their custody, he said from May 10 to June 28.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Independent Investigation panel has ordered SP Chinedu Okonkwo of Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Special Tactical Squad, Abuja to appear before it on March 24.
