President Muhammadu Buhari<\/a> has directed Sen. Hadi Sirika, the Minister of Aviation, to fast-track the planned concession of four major airports in the country.<\/p>\n

Buhari gave the directive on Tuesday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos,\u00a0 during the inauguration of the new terminal constructed by the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC).<\/p>\n

The President also ordered the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, to source funds for the immediate construction of a second runway at the Nmadi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.<\/p>\n

Buhari also directed the Ministry of Finance to work with the Aviation Ministry in ensuring the delivery of the two projects.<\/p>\n

According to him, the concession of the four terminals in Lagos<\/a>, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Abuja, will further propel development to the sector and grow the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

Buhari lauded the Ministry of Aviation and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)<\/a> for the completion of the new terminal.<\/p>\n

He said that it would create more jobs for qualified Nigerians.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new terminal will create additional 3,000 direct and indirect jobs, while the sector\u2019s contributions to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)<\/a>, will be enhanced.”<\/p>\n

\u201cThis event showcases our strong commitment to the growth of the Nigerian economy despite the challenges of finance facing the country.<\/p>\n

\u201dThis administration will continue to focus on key areas like agriculture, aviation, and infrastructure development, among others. Our aviation road map developed in 2016 has been consistent with infrastructural development.”<\/p>\n

\u201dWe have designated Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano airports as free trade zones, while we have also removed Valued Added Tax (VAT), from air transport,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Sirika said that the inauguration was a testament to the fact that President Buhari meant \u201creal business\u201d for the aviation industry.<\/p>\n

Sirika insisted that the aviation industry remained the only way by which the 2063 agenda of the African Union (AU), could be realized.<\/p>\n

The minister declared that one of the aims of the ministry was to grow aviation contributions to the GDP from its present 0.06 percent to five percent, at $4.7 billion, in the next few years.<\/p>\n

He explained that there would be air-rail connectivity between the domestic and international airports to shorten the traffic time between both terminals.<\/p>\n

Sirika mentioned foreign exchange and Jet-A1 as some of the challenges confronting the aviation industry, lamenting that these had led to numerous setbacks for the sector.<\/p>\n

He appealed to Buhari to direct the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)<\/a>, to import Jet fuel in good quantity for operators in the industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is pertinent to mention that we stand to gain significant benefits in restoring and maintaining connectivity within, to, and from the country. Analysis from IATA shows that the aviation sector provides N341 billion GDP contribution and 160,000 local jobs created.<\/p>\n

\u201dA total of N535 billion expenditure from visitors will be solely generated from restoring and maintaining this connectivity.”<\/p>\n

\u201cConsequently, Sir, these are the numbers at risk if that connectivity is threatened by the continuous travel restrictions due to the current pandemic.”<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. President, aviation business suffers from issues of access to foreign exchange by local and foreign airlines and the ability to repatriate blocked funds.”<\/p>\n

\u201cNigeria currently holds $283 million of foreign airlines\u2019 funds blocked in the country. I would like to humbly request the support of the Central Bank, through the directive of Mr. President.”<\/p>\n

\u201dThis is to prioritize access to forex for all carriers, both local and foreign, and to work out a mechanism to clear the existing backlog urgently and prevent subsequent build-up.”<\/p>\n

\u201cFacilities in the terminal include five baggage collection carousels, 16 Immigration desks at arrival, 28 Immigration desks at departure, and eight security screening points.”<\/p>\n

\u201dThe rest are six passenger boarding bridges, out of which two had already been installed, two food courts, four premium lounges, and 22 guest rooms and spa.”<\/p>\n

\u201cOther facilities are 16 airline ticketing offices, visa on arrival and port health facility, as well as praying area. We also have more than 3,000 square meters of duty-free space and approximately 5,000 square meters of lettable utility space,\u201d Sirika said.<\/p>\n

He said that CCECC had commenced the construction of four new terminals at Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt airports in 2013, with completion periods fixed for 20 months.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State had lauded Buhari for giving infrastructure top priority.<\/p>\n

Sanwo-Olu said that the three projects inaugurated on Tuesday, fertilizer plant, Lekki refinery, and the new terminal, would change the status of the country.<\/p>\n

He explained that the activities of Buhari would not only create jobs for the teeming populace but also open up the country for foreign investments and opportunities.<\/p>\n

Sanwo-Olu<\/a> said that the new Lagos terminal had the capacity to process 14 million passengers per annum and was built on a landmass of approximately 56,000 square meters, with 66 check-in counters.<\/p>\n
