{"id":15676,"date":"2022-03-24T07:35:42","date_gmt":"2022-03-24T07:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=15676"},"modified":"2022-03-24T07:35:42","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T07:35:42","slug":"travel-agent-bags-5-years-imprisonment-for-defrauding-e40000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/24\/travel-agent-bags-5-years-imprisonment-for-defrauding-e40000\/","title":{"rendered":"Travel agent bags 5 years\u2019 imprisonment for defrauding \u20ac40,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Wednesday sentenced a 50-year-old travel agent, Abiodun Sadiq, to five years\u2019 imprisonment for defrauding a man of 40,000 Euros for Maltese citizenship.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo found Sadiq guilty as charged and ordered him to make restitution to his victim, Mr Babatunde Emmanuel.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwo said that the prosecution proved all the seven counts against the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt.<\/p>\n<p>She sentenced the convict to five years\u2019 in prison on count one, and two years jail term each on counts two to seven.<\/p>\n<p>However, the judge held that the sentences should run concurrently.<\/p>\n<p>Defence counsel, Mr P.A. Awe, prayed the court\u00a0 to temper justice with mercy and grant a non-custodial sentence to the convict.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that the convict had pleaded not guilty to an amended seven-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretences and forgery.<\/p>\n<p>He was arraigned by the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/22\/alleged-misappropriation-efcc-grants-obiano-administrative-bail\/\"><strong>Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC)<\/strong> <\/a>for parading himself as an agent of Maltese Government and defrauding Emmanuel of the sum.<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, the prosecution team led by Mr S.O. Daji presented four witnesses and tendered eight exhibits to prove the case against Sadiq.<\/p>\n<p>Daji told the court that the convict committed the offences between May 14, 2019 and July 23, 2019 in Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution said that the convict fraudulently collected the sum from Emmanuel for a Maltese Government citizenship investment programme and procurement of Malta International Passport.<\/p>\n<p>He said the convict also forged an international passport with Number 7255732 with name \u2013\u00a0 Babatunde Emmanuel Babalola\u00a0 \u2013 purporting the said passport to emanate from Passport Office in Malta.<\/p>\n<p>He added that Emmanuel, also the second prosecution witness, narrated how he was humiliated in Europe and treated like a terrorist due to the forged passport.<\/p>\n<p>Daji said the convict also forged two other Maltese international passports with names \u2013\u00a0 Vincent Genesis \u00a0Oyinlola and Vincent Olivia Ashinedun.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the offences violated Section1(1)(a) (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences, 2006, and Section 363 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Wednesday sentenced a 50-year-old travel agent, Abiodun Sadiq, to five years\u2019 imprisonment for defrauding a man of 40,000 Euros for Maltese citizenship.
