{"id":16120,"date":"2022-03-28T15:08:39","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T15:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=16120"},"modified":"2022-03-28T15:08:39","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T15:08:39","slug":"police-arrest-couple-for-n52m-cyber-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/28\/police-arrest-couple-for-n52m-cyber-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Police arrest couple for N52m cyber fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"page\" class=\"site grid-container container hfeed\">\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"site-content\">\n<div id=\"primary\" class=\"content-area\">\n<article id=\"post-125812\" class=\"post-125812 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-defence-security author_contact-3571\">\n<div class=\"inside-article\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Operatives of Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) Ikoyi, Lagos, have arrested George Ewere, 62, and his wife for alleged cyber fraud involving N52 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson of PSFU, SP Eyitayo Johnson, made this known in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>According to Johnson, the suspects were arrested for conspiracy, cyber fraud\/Business Email Compromise, Criminal Conversion and Stealing.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the arrests followed a petition addressed to the Commissioner of Police, PSFU by the Law Firm of Athan Ogbulie &amp; Co. alleging diversion of the aforesaid sum during Inter-Bank wire transfer of the funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe suspect and members of the syndicate targeted and compromised the email accounts of businesses that frequently make wire payments and waited for the right time to substitute the original account that should receive the money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the suspect, the hack which happened in February 2022 was achieved by spoofing on the victim company\u2019s email account\/website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich makes it possible to carry out slight variations to the legitimate email address of the company in order to fool the victim into thinking the fake accounts are authentic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpear phishing emails were also sent to the company to gain access to company accounts, calendars and data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said that some of the money which was diverted into five different banks had been recovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of money which was diverted into accounts belonging to the suspect, his wife and daughter has been recovered as exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile effort is on to locate the rest of the funds and other members of the syndicate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the money was also discovered to have been withdrawn via Point-of-Sale (POS) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/22\/firstbank-splashes-n4m-on-customers-in-verve-card-promo\/\"><strong>Automated Teller Machine (ATM)<\/strong><\/a> at different locations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson also revealed that the Commissioner of Police, PSFU, CP Anyasinti Josephine, has advised individuals and businesses to take note of the some precautions in order to mitigate against Business Email Compromise (BEC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe careful of information shared online (such as pet names, birthday, don\u2019t click on anything in an unsolicited email\/sms asking you to update or verify account information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarefully examine the email address, URL, and spelling used in any correspondence; set up two factor (or multi-factor) authentication on any account that allows it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe careful what you download.
