{"id":16291,"date":"2022-03-30T08:37:31","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T08:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=16291"},"modified":"2022-03-30T08:37:31","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T08:37:31","slug":"with-rouble-payment-deadline-looming-germany-eyes-gas-emergency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/30\/with-rouble-payment-deadline-looming-germany-eyes-gas-emergency\/","title":{"rendered":"With rouble payment deadline looming, Germany eyes gas emergency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/15\/germanys-new-chancellor-scholz-to-deliver-first-statement-in-parliament\/\">Germany<\/a> sounded the first official alarm about gas supplies on Wednesday, as the country comes to grips with the reality that Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine may disrupt its energy supplies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere are no current supply bottlenecks. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">But we have to ramp up our precautionary measures to be ready in case of an escalation from the Russian side,\u201d said Economy Minister, Robert Habeck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Habeck\u2019s decision puts the country on an early alert, as detailed in its emergency gas supply plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The three-stage emergency plan details ways to conserve gas, secure supplies, and make sure households have adequate amounts of fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An emergency team is now being assembled to review Germany\u2019s options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the moment, no systems to establish government oversight of distribution are being set up, though they could be, should the emergency level rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis means all gas consumers from businesses to private households have to reduce their usage as much as possible,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The invasion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/21\/ukraine-invasion-france-freezes-e850m-of-russian-assets\/\">Ukraine<\/a> has prompted a series of sanctions on Russia that have left it scrambling for foreign currency reserves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, Europe has not cut off its purchases of oil and gas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Russian President, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/18\/putin-to-oversee-russian-ballistic-missile-drills-on-saturday\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a>, has said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/22\/russia-invasion-zelensky-calls-on-ukrainians-to-persevere-and-resist\/\">Russia<\/a> will soon only accept payments for gas in roubles, likely an effort to bolster its currency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But Western countries said they will not comply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Should the situation require Germany to implement its highest warning level, officials would likely take over distribution to make sure gas was available for protected customers, the minister said<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Germany sounded the first official alarm about gas supplies on Wednesday, as the country comes to grips with the reality that Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine may disrupt its energy supplies. \u201cThere are no current supply bottlenecks.
