{"id":16659,"date":"2022-04-04T13:23:04","date_gmt":"2022-04-04T13:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=16659"},"modified":"2022-04-04T13:23:04","modified_gmt":"2022-04-04T13:23:04","slug":"newmap-reclaims-30-hectares-of-degraded-land-in-kaduna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/04\/newmap-reclaims-30-hectares-of-degraded-land-in-kaduna\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWMAP reclaims 30 hectares of degraded land in Kaduna"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/28\/world-bank-grants-morocco-180m-loan-to-support-agriculture\/\">World Bank<\/a>-supported Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has planted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/17\/preserve-ecosystem-by-restoring-indigenous-trees-don-tasks-nigerians\/\">trees<\/a> on 30 hectares in three local government areas (LGAs) of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/26\/no-substitute-to-dialogue-in-resolving-crisis-facing-kaduna-state-can\/\">Kaduna State<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Project Coordinator, Mr Jibril Dahiru, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Monday, said this was part of climate change mitigation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Dahiru said that trees were planted on 10 hectares each in Igabi, Kaura and Makarfi LGAs, adding that the effort was part of the project\u2019s reclamation of degraded land.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that land degradation was happening at an alarming pace, contributing to a dramatic decline in the productivity of croplands and rangelands worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dahiru, when land is degraded, soil carbon and nitrous oxide will be released into the atmosphere, making land degradation one of the most important contributors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/02\/15\/wmo-laments-impact-of-climate-change-says-adaptation-essential\/\">climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the project, which began officially in June 2021, had reached 90 per cent completion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have achieved a lot since the inception of the project designed to control erosion in targeted areas, reverse land degradation, improve afforestation and halt biodiversity loss.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have successfully evacuated dump sites, including the notorious site at Sadauna Memorial College, Uguwan Dosa, Kaduna, where we have planted orchards and drilled boreholes,\u201d Dahiru said.<\/p>\n<p>The coordinator also said that the project would install an automated flood early warning system in each of the three senatorial zones.<\/p>\n<p>He said that weather stations would be installed at Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, and Federal Government College of Education, Zaria, as part of institutional strengthening to mitigate flooding.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that the Kaduna State Government had in March begun desilting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/23\/flooding-newmap-begins-drainages-desilting-in-kaduna\/\">drainages<\/a> across the state to mitigate flooding under the NEWMAP project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World Bank-supported Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has planted trees on 30 hectares in three local government areas (LGAs) of Kaduna State.
