{"id":17064,"date":"2022-04-08T12:17:45","date_gmt":"2022-04-08T12:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=17064"},"modified":"2022-04-08T12:17:45","modified_gmt":"2022-04-08T12:17:45","slug":"nnpc-seeks-special-courts-for-prosecution-of-oil-thieves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/08\/nnpc-seeks-special-courts-for-prosecution-of-oil-thieves\/","title":{"rendered":"NNPC seeks special courts for prosecution of oil thieves"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd. has called for the establishment of special courts for the prosecution of oil thieves in the country.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Mr Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/04\/fg-charges-shell-chevron-nnpc-others-on-gas-supply-to-nlng-plants\/\">NNPC<\/a>, made the call on Thursday in Abuja when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Upstream, investigating the loses of Nigeria crude oil production to theft .<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He disclosed that the country lost over 1.5 billion dollars to oil theft between January and March 2022.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He said that the\u00a0 special courts had become necessary to unmask those behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/04\/fire-kills-illegal-petrol-marketer-and-wife-in-jos-amidst-ongoing-fuel-scarcity\/\">illegal<\/a> crude oil refining.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe must have special courts to try those behind this business. This is an elite business, it is not done by poor people,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He expressed worry over loss of crude oil production to activities of vandals and oil thieves, adding that stern security measures were being considered to restore production situation and improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/29\/buhari-calls-for-efficient-tax-administration-to-boost-revenue\/\">revenue<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">He also disclosed that efforts were on top gear to ensure the situation was addressed, stressing that there would be tremendous progress within the next two months.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Kyari said thieves and vandals had rendered some of the facilities useless as the activities of vandals and thieves had got to a level that the NNPC had to shut down some facilities.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to him, the NNPC can no longer sustain production as expected because of the activities of the oil thieves and vandals.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cIt came to a level where we could only receive 300 barrel per day,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The lawmakers, however, said it was time\u00a0 to declare a state of emergency in conveying crude oil and mandated the strict monitoring\u00a0 of\u00a0 pipelines.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd. has called for the establishment of special courts for the prosecution of oil thieves in the country.
