{"id":18449,"date":"2022-04-13T20:42:51","date_gmt":"2022-04-13T20:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=18449"},"modified":"2022-04-13T20:42:51","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T20:42:51","slug":"osinachi-seek-judicial-reprieve-from-abusive-marriages-lawyers-urge-woman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/13\/osinachi-seek-judicial-reprieve-from-abusive-marriages-lawyers-urge-woman\/","title":{"rendered":"Osinachi: Seek judicial reprieve from abusive marriages \u2013 Lawyers urge woman"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Worried by the rising spate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/11\/24\/fema-collaborates-with-fida-to-combat-domestic-violence\/\">domestic violence<\/a> in the society, some female lawyers in Nigeria have on Wednesday,\u00a0 urged victims to seek timely judicial reprieve from abusive union in order to stay alive.<\/p>\n<p>They made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) about the recent death of popular Nigerian gospel singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/13\/nawoj-fct-condemns-alleged-murder-of-gospel-artist-osinachi-nwachukwu\/\">Osinachi Nwachukwu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that Nwachukwu, 42, who is popular for her gospel hit song \u201cEkwueme\u201d reportedly died on Friday night, in an undisclosed hospital in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier reports claimed that she died of throat cancer after days on life support.<\/p>\n<p>However, the social media has been agog with allegations of constant beatings and bullying by the late singer\u2019s husband, Mr. Peter Nwachukwu, which many claims resulted in her death<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer, of the FCT Police Command, had on Monday confirmed the arrest of the late singer\u2019s husband.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with NAN on Wednesday, Mrs. Ebere Obiora, Chairperson of the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Ogun state chapter, urged victims of domestic violence to speak out without fear<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy advice is that men and women should be free to choose whether to stay unmarried or not as being single is never a taboo&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed flags in marriages are warning signs and should not be overlooked for any reason, so, once a marriage becomes abusive, the woman must speak out so that proper steps will be taken to guard against tragedy,\u201d she said<\/p>\n<p>Obiora noted that the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Laws (commonly referred to as the VAPP) has criminalized domestic abuse thus making victims confident to report such crimes.<\/p>\n<p>In the same vein, Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association Ota branch Mrs. Chinelo Nonyelu-Olayanju while noting that domestic abuse can also affect men described the spate of women as alarming.<\/p>\n<p>She urged victims of violence to take proper steps to ensure their survival and continued happiness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to social media that have kept us abreast with information like this. Women have a lot of roles to play in life whether as caregivers, daughters, wives, or mothers, and these roles can only be played when they treat lives as \u201csacred\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen must learn to say No to the violence of any sort be it emotional, psychological, physical, or even financial; and they must do this regardless of what people will or might say,\u201d she said<\/p>\n<p>Nonyelu-Olayanju noted that every woman owed herself a duty to be happy adding that the goal of raising quality children can only be achieved if women made cautious efforts to remain alive<\/p>\n<p>On her part, a member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Ms. Funmi Adeogun urged every woman to shun all acts of stigmatization on grounds of being separated or divorced<\/p>\n<p>\u201dBeing alive to see your children grow and to reap the fruits of your motherly care, is more important than putting your life on the line by enduring violence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is meaningless, seeking to prove a point to people who may not understand your plight; so, you must call for help the moment you perceive elements of abuse in your union,\u201d she said<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Worried by the rising spate of domestic violence in the society, some female lawyers in Nigeria have on Wednesday,\u00a0 urged victims to seek timely judicial reprieve from abusive union in order to stay alive.
