{"id":18463,"date":"2022-04-13T18:44:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-13T18:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=18463"},"modified":"2022-04-13T18:44:00","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T18:44:00","slug":"clearing-agent-docked-for-alleged-n12-6m-fraud-april-13-2022-by-adaeze-iroha-clearing-agent-docked-for-alleged-n12-6m-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/13\/clearing-agent-docked-for-alleged-n12-6m-fraud-april-13-2022-by-adaeze-iroha-clearing-agent-docked-for-alleged-n12-6m-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Clearing agent docked for alleged N12.6m fraud April 13, 2022 by adaeze iroha Clearing agent docked for alleged N12.6m fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>\u00a0A 35-year-old clearing agent, Oliseh Egbochite, was on Wednesday docked in a Yaba Chief Magistrates\u2019 Court in Lagos for allegedly defrauding a man of N12.6million.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/12\/delta-police-command-holds-recruitment-exam\/\">police<\/a> charged\u00a0Egbochite, whose residential address was not provided, with obtaining by false pretences and theft.<\/p>\n<p>He pleaded not guilty to the charge.<\/p>\n<p>The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Rita Momah, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in November 2021, at Apapa area of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/11\/nysc-appoints-baderinwa-as-lagos-state-coordinator\/\">Lagos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Momah said the complainant, Mr Okechukwu Okueme, gave the defendant N12.6 million to clear his container of goods from the Apapa port.<\/p>\n<p>She said that the defendant squandered the money and could not clear the container, leaving it to attract demurrage at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/13\/putin-says-russia-can-also-export-oil-gas-to-other-countries\/\">port<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The offence, she said, contravened the provisions of sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).<\/p>\n<p>Reports that Section 314 is punishable by 15 years imprisonment for obtaining by false pretences while 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/13\/buhari-swears-in-npc-icpc-commissioners\/\">offence<\/a> of stealing.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo\u00a0 admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N5million with two sureties in like sum.<\/p>\n<p>She ordered that both sureties must reside within the court\u2019s jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>Adedayo adjourned the case until May 9 for mention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<footer class=\"entry-meta\" aria-label=\"Entry meta\">\n<nav id=\"nav-below\" class=\"post-navigation\" aria-label=\"Single Post\"><\/nav>\n<\/footer>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0A 35-year-old clearing agent, Oliseh Egbochite, was on Wednesday docked in a Yaba Chief Magistrates\u2019 Court in Lagos for allegedly defrauding a man of N12.6million.
