{"id":19041,"date":"2022-04-15T19:16:36","date_gmt":"2022-04-15T19:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=19041"},"modified":"2022-04-15T19:16:36","modified_gmt":"2022-04-15T19:16:36","slug":"un-allocates-15m-to-address-rising-food-insecurity-in-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/15\/un-allocates-15m-to-address-rising-food-insecurity-in-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"UN allocates $15m to address rising food insecurity in Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UN has allocated 15 million dollars from the 100 million dollars earmarked to Africa and Middle East to address food insecurity as the spillover effects of Ukraine war threaten to push millions even closer to famine.<\/p>\n<p>The contribution from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), which was announced on Thursday, would go towards relief projects in six <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/13\/nepc-sensitises-stakeholders-on-non-oil-products-exports-to-african-markets\/\">African<\/a> countries and Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>The countries are Nigeria, Somalia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/25\/tigrayan-rebels-agree-to-cessation-of-hostilities-in-northern-ethiopia-conflict\/\">Ethiopia<\/a>, Kenya, Susan&#8217;s and South<\/p>\n<p>The CERF was established in 2005 to deliver urgently needed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/24\/icrc-in-moscow-for-humanitarian-issues\/\">humanitarian<\/a> assistance whenever and wherever crises arise.<\/p>\n<p>The fund pools contributions from a range of donors, with more than 130 UN Member States, observers, others, including private individuals, providing more than eight billion dollars through the years.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past six months, CERF has allocated more than 170 million dollars to address rising food <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/14\/bmo-to-nef-stop-your-tantrums-insecurity-not-a-trifling-matter\/\">insecurity<\/a> in several countries, including those that will receive the new funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood insecurity in these seven countries is mainly being driven by armed conflict, drought and economic turmoil, and the Ukraine conflict is making a dire situation even worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe war began on Feb. 24 and disrupted food and energy markets, causing food and fuel prices to soar,\u2019\u2019 Martin Griffiths, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/15\/nigerian-diplomat-peters-emuze-re-elected-into-un-rights-committee\/\">UN<\/a> Emergency Relief Coordinator said.<\/p>\n<p>The money will enable UN agencies and their partners to provide critical support, including food, cash, nutritional help, medical services, shelter and clean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/11\/jos-water-corporation-blames-scarcity-on-epileptic-power-supply-road-projects\/\">water<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Projects will also be tailored to help women and girls, who face additional risks due to the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds of thousands of children are going to sleep hungry every night while their parents are worried sick about how to feed them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA war halfway around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/13\/insecurity-world-bank-expresses-concern-proffers-measures-to-curtail-trend\/\">world<\/a> makes their prospects even worse. This allocation will save lives,\u201d Griffiths said.<\/p>\n<p>The CERF funding will support humanitarian operations, with 30 million dollars for the Horn of Africa, divided between Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>Another 20 million dollars will go to Yemen while Sudan will also receive the same amount. South Sudan will be allocated 15 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/03\/nigeria-needs-5bn-dollars-annually-to-meet-contraceptive-needs-sogon\/\">dollars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in April, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) reported that global food prices were at \u201ca new all-time high\u201d, reaching levels not seen since 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Humanitarians measure food insecurity levels using a five-point scale called the Integrated Phase Classification (IPC).<\/p>\n<p>Phase 5 is a situation in which \u201cstarvation, death, destitution and extremely critical acute malnutrition levels are evident\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Famine is declared when hunger and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/15\/abia-apga-commiserates-with-wabara-over-wifes-death\/\">death<\/a> rates pass certain thresholds.<\/p>\n<p>Some 161,000 people in Yemen are projected to face the catastrophic Phase 5 level by the middle of the year, according to the UN humanitarian affairs office, OCHA.<\/p>\n<p>In South Sudan, 55,000 people may already be experiencing it, while another 81,000 in Somalia could face the same if rains fail, prices continue to rise and aid is not scaled up.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, around 4.5 million people across Sudan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/15\/nigerian-diplomat-peters-emuze-re-elected-into-un-rights-committee\/\">Nigeria<\/a> and Kenya are already, or soon will be, facing emergency levels of hunger \u2013 IPC Phase 4.<\/p>\n<p>The CERF funding will also boost response in Ethiopia, amid its worst drought in recent history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UN has allocated 15 million dollars from the 100 million dollars earmarked to Africa and Middle East to address food insecurity as the spillover effects of Ukraine war threaten to push millions even closer to famine.
