{"id":19226,"date":"2022-04-16T08:47:48","date_gmt":"2022-04-16T08:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=19226"},"modified":"2022-04-16T08:47:48","modified_gmt":"2022-04-16T08:47:48","slug":"ricketts-led-consortium-withdraws-bid-to-buy-chelsea-fc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/16\/ricketts-led-consortium-withdraws-bid-to-buy-chelsea-fc\/","title":{"rendered":"Ricketts-led consortium withdraws bid to buy Chelsea FC"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">The Ricketts-led consortium has withdrawn its bid to buy English Premier League club Chelsea.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The Chicago Cubs owners and their partners opted not to submit a final bid for the Blues.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that the consortium members have been unable to agree the final composition of their offer.<\/p>\n<p>Cubs owners Tom and Laura Ricketts had partnered with US billionaires Ken Griffin and Dan Gilbert on a cash-only bid to buy the Blues.<\/p>\n<p>Final bids were due to be submitted to New York merchant bank the Raine Group on Thursday, but the Ricketts-led group has now withdrawn its candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ricketts-Griffin-Gilbert group has decided, after careful consideration, not to submit a final bid for Chelsea FC,\u201dread a Ricketts family statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the process of finalising the proposal, it became increasingly clear that certain issues could not be addressed given the unusual dynamics around the sales process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have great admiration for Chelsea and its fans and we wish the new owners well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ricketts\u2019 bid for Chelsea had come under fire from Blues supporters, over family patriarch Joe Ricketts\u2019 historic emails from 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters had staged a small demonstration at Stamford Bridge, with the Ricketts family working hard to prove an inclusive and diverse bid to buy the club.<\/p>\n<p>Those objections have however not played any part in the Ricketts withdrawing their bid for Chelsea.<\/p>\n<p>Russian-Israeli billionaire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/27\/april-deadline-set-for-final-bids-for-chelsea\/\"><strong>Roman Abramovich<\/strong><\/a> put Chelsea up for sale on March 2, amid Russia\u2019s continued invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The 55-year-old was then sanctioned by the UK Government on March 10, with Downing Street claiming to have proven his links to Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea have been granted a special Government licence to continue operating, though under strict terms.<\/p>\n<p>Abramovich cannot profit from Chelsea\u2019s sale, but had already vowed to write off the club\u2019s 1.5 billion pounds (1.96 billion dollars) debt.<\/p>\n<p>The Ricketts\u2019 withdrawal leaves LA Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly, Sir Martin Broughton and Boston Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca as the remaining Chelsea bidders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ricketts-led consortium has withdrawn its bid to buy English Premier League club Chelsea.
