\u00a0Google on Tuesday announced its first Product Development Centre in Africa to help create transformative products and services for people in Africa and around the world.<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n
\n

The Vice President\u00a0of the product\u00a0at Google, Ms Susan Frey, said at a Virtual\u00a0Media Round Table\u00a0that Google would also be hiring for the development<\/a>\u00a0centre to be located at\u00a0Nairobi.<\/p>\n

She said there would be\u00a0hiring of visionary engineers, product managers, UX designers and researchers to lay the foundation for significant growth in the coming years.<\/p>\n

Frey also said that the centre was looking for talented, creative people who would help solve difficult and important technical challenges, such as improving the smartphone experience for people in Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She said that talented\u00a0people would also be building a more reliable internet infrastructure.<\/p>\n

She said that in October 2021, at a `Google for Africa\u2019<\/em>\u00a0event, the Chief Executive Officer, Sundar Pichai, announced a\u00a0plan to invest $1billion<\/a>\u00a0over the next 5 years to support Africa\u2019s digital transformation.<\/p>\n

According to her, this investment focuses on enabling fast, affordable internet access for more Africans, building helpful products, supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses and helping non-profits to improve lives across Africa.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019In 2018, Google also opened an AI Research Centre in Accra, Ghana<\/a> to help drive useful innovations.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019The new product development centre is a continuation of that commitment and will be working on building for Africa and the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoogle\u2019s mission in Africa is to make the Internet helpful to Africans and partner with African governments, policy makers, educators, entrepreneurs and businesses to shape the next wave of innovation in Africa.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019 Today I am excited to welcome all Africans passionate about improving the digital experience of African users by building better products to apply for the open roles at our first product development centre in Africa,\u2019\u2019 Frey said.<\/p>\n

Managing Director for Google in Africa, Nitin Gajria, said there were 300 million internet users in Africa who were young, mobile-first and had similar patterns to mobile youth globally.<\/p>\n

Gajria said that by 2030, Africa would have 800 million internet users and a third of the world\u2019s under-35 population<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He said that the potential for Africa to become a leading digital economy was right on the horizon and Google was committed to accelerating Africa\u2019s digital transformation through human capital.<\/p>\n

According to him, it will also\u00a0enable African-led solutions to African and global problems through better products.<\/p>\n

He said that all the roles announced about building for Africa and the world could be viewed at\u00a0careers.google.com site<\/a>.<\/p>\n
