{"id":20379,"date":"2022-04-21T17:50:46","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T17:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=20379"},"modified":"2022-04-21T17:50:46","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T17:50:46","slug":"lg-boss-cries-out-over-lassa-fever-outbreak-in-kogi-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/21\/lg-boss-cries-out-over-lassa-fever-outbreak-in-kogi-community\/","title":{"rendered":"LG boss cries out over lassa fever outbreak in Kogi community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Chairman, Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi, Mr William Iko\u2019ojo, on Thursday appealed to the federal and state governments for urgent intervention over lassa fever outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Iko\u2019ojo made the appeal in an interview with our correspondent in<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Onyedega, headquarters of Ibaji Local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/20\/afdb-host-consultations-with-governments-to-promote-blueprint-equip-africas-workforce\/\">Government<\/a> Area, Kogi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe are overwhelmed by the outbreak of Lassa Fever in Ibaji.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe disease has killed more than 20 persons, most of who are herdsmen living in hamlets within the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAlready three persons are on admission at Irrua Specialist Teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/20\/ogunruku-family-donates-6-bedroom-apartment-to-federal-teaching-hospital-ido-ekiti\/\">Hospital<\/a>, Idumabo Irrua, Edo, where the disease was officially confirmed to be Lassa Fever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe unfortunate thing was that when the disease broke out, the villagers were ignorant of the cause and death of their loved ones, and were thronging around each other to help,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He explained that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2021\/12\/03\/eu-to-support-farmers-on-disease-identification-surveillance\/\">disease<\/a> had spread so fast and killed many of the villagers in some of the communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAnother challenge we have now is that our only Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) is without facilities and a doctor that could help us in controlling the outbreak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOf course, the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Idumabo Irrua, Edo, is the closest hospital that handles lassa fever disease,\u201d he lamented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The LG boss said he had reported the outbreak to the state government, which promised to send some medical personnel and facilities to help arrest the spread of the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our correspondent gathered that Aya and neighbouring communities of the local government in early March, started witnessing mysterious deaths of rice farmers and other members but could not ascertain the cause of deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mr David Inah-Ogwu, former Chairman, Ibaji Local Government Area and one time member, Kogi State House of Assembly, said the epidemic was real.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Inah-Ogwu, who described the situation as \u201cvery unfortunate\u201d and \u201calarming\u201d said the epidemic started with about four persons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He said they fell ill and died mysteriously with more and more persons manifesting similar symptoms in the last three weeks, who had been taken to the hospital in Irrua.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt is easier for the people in those affected communities to \u201cjust cross the river, and get to Uromi and from there to Irrua for their treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOut of the set of 22 persons that went there (Hospital), nine were confirmed to have Lassa Fever; two were treated and discharged while seven are still there receiving treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSo far we can say that the casualty figure is about 20. Some died with the symptoms but nobody can say specifically what killed them since they were not tested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHowever, we are lucky and happy that the rainy season is here because cases of lassa fever are rampant during dry season and very common within the rice producing areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is because rats urinate on harvested rice, cassava and other food stuffs on the farms and in homes, which makes the transmission of lassa fever in those areas very easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThank God the state government has waded in, even though the incidence is more serious than what have been reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s good that the communities themselves are already sensitising their members to be more careful,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When contacted, Mr Alonge Daniel, Permanent Secretary, Kogi State Ministry of Health, confirmed the outbreak and that the state had swung into action to arrest the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe are presently holding a meeting on the matter to see how we could arrest the situation,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Chairman, Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi, Mr William Iko\u2019ojo, on Thursday appealed to the federal and state governments for urgent intervention over lassa fever outbreak.
