{"id":20477,"date":"2022-04-22T07:37:09","date_gmt":"2022-04-22T07:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=20477"},"modified":"2022-04-22T07:37:09","modified_gmt":"2022-04-22T07:37:09","slug":"journalists-call-for-protective-laws-full-implementation-of-foi-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/22\/journalists-call-for-protective-laws-full-implementation-of-foi-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalists call for protective laws, full implementation of FOI Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/17\/ramadan-christian-journalists-join-muslim-colleagues-to-observe-iftar-breakfast-in-gombe\/\">Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ)<\/a> on Thursday called for the enactment of protection laws and full implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/03\/03\/electoral-law-inec-calls-for-greater-partnership-with-media\/\">Freedom of Information Act<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The NUJ, Kogi branch, made the call in a communique after a one-day workshop organized by Stallion Times Media Services in collaboration with the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The workshop, facilitated through the Collaborative Media Project with support from the MacArthur Foundation, was attended by journalists from broadcast, print, and blogosphere organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The workshop resolved that government officials should be compelled to adhere to provisions of the FOI Act by making available required information of public interest to journalists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Communique, signed by Isiyaku Ahmed and Adeiza Jimoh CEO\/Editor-in-Chief, Stallion Times Media Services, and NUJ Chairman, Kogi respectively, said the welfare of journalists should be prioritized by media owners to minimize undue influence or interference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere should be periodic training and capacity building for practicing journalists for enhanced professionalism. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">The incidence of quacks should be checked by regulatory authorities like the Nigerian Press Council and other regulatory bodies.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cGovernment agencies should work with the media as a watchdog and punish\/sanction any public figure that perpetuates acts of misconduct exposed through investigative reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is to deter would-be perpetrators so as to encourage good conduct, especially in governance, to engender growth, accountability, decency, discipline, transparency, and probity in governance,\u201d it stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It noted that for better results, journalists should apply the principles of truthfulness, \u201cSeek truth and report it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The communique also enjoined journalists to always uphold accuracy and objectivity by reporting all sides to a story and to ensure fairness and impartiality to minimize the harm that could be caused by their reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The communique said, \u201cJournalists, by their conduct, should act independently by putting the public interest first.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Thursday called for the enactment of protection laws and full implementation of the Freedom of Information Act.
