{"id":21501,"date":"2022-04-27T09:19:34","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T09:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=21501"},"modified":"2022-04-27T09:19:34","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T09:19:34","slug":"police-nscdc-disagree-over-shooting-incident-in-imo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/27\/police-nscdc-disagree-over-shooting-incident-in-imo\/","title":{"rendered":"Police, NSCDC disagree over shooting incident in Imo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/23\/nscdc-arrests-8-suspects-for-bunkering-in-ondo\/\"><strong>Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC),<\/strong> <\/a>and the Nigeria Police have differed over a clash that led to sporadic gunshots fired at the NSCDC office on Monday.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650952677678\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650952679130\">The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident left many residents and motorists scampering for safety.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650952278065\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650952280907\">Addressing newsmen on the development, the NSCDC Commandant in the state, Mr Michael Ogar, alleged that the incident was an attack on him and officers of the corps by the Nigeria Police.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650985415535\">According to Ogar, the incident was in connection with an earlier detained man, Nonso Ezenwanne, who claimed to be a policeman, but with multiple identification cards.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650953627216\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650953640775\">He explained that his personnel had an altercation with Ezenwanne, following the disruption of his motorcade while returning from the scene of an inferno at an illegal oil bunkering site in the state on Sunday.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650955622867\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650955623443\">\u201cAs if that was not enough, he trailed us to Owerri and blocked my motorcade again, and brought out a pistol threatening to shoot us. but he was later disarmed and arrested.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954139839\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954140417\">\u201cI had reached out to the former Acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Giwa, to identify the suspect which is the norm, but yielded no result as he said he had been transferred to Kaduna, and we could not find anybody to identify him.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954285325\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954286278\">\u201cIt was on my way to see MOPOL 18 Commander, just about 10 meters away from NSCDC office, I saw eight vehicles that blocked me and started shooting into the air and my vehicle.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954441479\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954442001\">\u201cThey dragged me out, flogged and bartered me, and later took me to their command where they continued to beat me with sticks and baton,\u201d the Commandant claimed.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954676831\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954677450\">He said after about three hours, an Assistant Commissioner of Police in-charge of Operations, later came to his rescue and took him home.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954799499\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954800035\">\u201cI came back to my office to see the extent of damage, that was when I found out that two of my personnel got bullet injuries and were receiving treatment in the hospital.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954961309\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650954962254\">While noting that his official car and some exhibits parked around the office vicinity were damaged, he added that the attackers also made away with his phones, pistol and an AK 47.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650955053820\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650955054495\">\u201cThey accepted that the items were in their custody and that the matter will be resolved today.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650955129249\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650955129768\">\u201cI told them that this incident is a disgrace to security agencies; I was surprised. I do not think we are here to flex muscles or pursue work ego, but to defend our fatherland.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650955382908\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650955383095\">\u201cI was highly disappointed and embarrassed by the action of MOPOL 18,\u201d Ogar said, adding that the detained man was also whisked away by the attackers during the incident.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650955436612\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650985492314\">However, in a statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Mike Abattam on Tuesday, he described the incident as an \u201cunlawful arrest and detention\/serious assault occasioning harm on a police superintendent by the NSCDC personnel.\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983616709\">\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650985983782\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983758253\">Abattam said Ezenwanne, a Mobile Police officer and the Armament Officer of No. 18 Mobile Police Force, Owerri, was driving to Imo Police Command Headquarters on an assignment, but encountered a traffic jam.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986078102\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983846232\">He said: \u201cWhile the officer was trying to make way for himself, the Civil Defence Personnel appeared from the rear, hit the Police officer\u2019s vehicle violently, shouting and ordering him to remove his vehicle from the road.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983856922\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983857487\">\u201cHe replied the civil defence officer that he was equally trying to see how he could get out of the traffic, only for the officer to slap him hard on his face, calling him a stupid man.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983871256\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983871848\">\u201cAt that point he alighted from his vehicle and introduced himself as a Police Superintendent serving at Police Mobil Base, Owerri.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983881634\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983881991\">\u201cIt was as if he angered him the more, he gave him another slap and others joined in beating him.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe police officer then brought out his phone to call to his commanding officer, but they seized the phone, rushed into their vehicle and zoomed off,\u201d Abattam also alleged.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983616709\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983915432\">He said the police officer managed to follow them to their office to demand for his phone, but his request was turned and he was instead locked up in a cell after seizing his service pistol.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986278542\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986351537\">\u201cBecause of his sensitive office, his disappearance became alarming to every office in the base and it became a suspected case of kidnapping.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986356303\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986357679\">\u201cHence, a search party was organised, and when all efforts to trace his whereabouts proved abortive, his phone was tracked and it led the team to the civil defence headquarters, Owerri.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983616709\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986414399\">\u201cOn arrival, the team of Policemen made inquiries to confirm if there was any Police officer in their custody, but they became hostile, ordering the Police officers to leave or they will shoot them.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen the Police insisted, they started shooting into the air,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986465148\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986465747\">According to him, the Mobile Police Officers sensing danger, used tear gas, a minimal force, to defend themselves, which sent the NSCDC personnel scampering for safety.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Police spokesman claimed the detained officer was rescued gallantly from the NSCDC custody, leaving nobody hurt or injured.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983616709\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986616000\">\u201cIt is pertinent to mention here that in the ethics of service, whenever a member of the force is arrested by any security agency, it is mandatory that the Police command is immediately informed, which is the standard practice.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983616709\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986662373\">\u201cIt is laughable that a very senior Police officer of the rank of a superintendent, was arrested and detained for more that 24 hours by the civil defence, and the commandant never deemed it necessary to inform the Commissioner of Police as required by law.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMoreso, when the victim pleaded with them to allow him put a call to his commanding officer or the commissioner of police,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983616709\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986702971\">Abattam said that Ezenwanne was on admission at the Police Medical Centre, Amakohia, in Imo.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650983616709\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986735862\">He reiterated the call by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Mohammed Barde, for residents of the state to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses without any fear of harassment.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986790392\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"yMail_cursorElementTracker_1650986791354\">He also added that Barde had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID), to commence detailed investigation into the cause of the incident.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Abattam promised that at the conclusion of investigation, the
