{"id":22299,"date":"2022-05-01T15:09:59","date_gmt":"2022-05-01T15:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=22299"},"modified":"2022-05-01T15:09:59","modified_gmt":"2022-05-01T15:09:59","slug":"ndlea-intercepts-n1-1bn-travellers-cheques-10-89kg-cocaine-at-lagos-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/01\/ndlea-intercepts-n1-1bn-travellers-cheques-10-89kg-cocaine-at-lagos-airport\/","title":{"rendered":"NDLEA intercepts N1.1bn travellers\u2019 cheques, 10.89kg cocaine at Lagos airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<p class=\"entry-title\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/28\/police-arrest-21-commercial-motorcyclists-for-allegedly-killing-ndlea-personnel\/\"><strong>National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)<\/strong><\/a> has intercepted travellers\u2019 cheques in various foreign currencies of over N1.1billion at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>This is contained in a statement by Mr Femi Babafemi, Director, Media and Advocacy, of the\u00a0 agency, on Sunday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>According to Babafemi, at least, a suspect, Oguma Uchenna, had been arrested in connection to an attempt to export the cheques.<\/p>\n<p>These cheques, he said, were neatly concealed inside four bound hard cover books, disguised as academic project literatures, to the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the financial instruments suspected to be counterfeits, were discovered on April 27, at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) export shed of the Lagos airport.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the discovery was made during cargo examination of some consignments meant for exportation to the UK on a cargo flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA breakdown of the cheques shows they have monetary values of two hundred and eighty seven thousand, six hundred and twenty three dollars, thirty one cent ($287, 623.31)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne million, four hundred and fifty six thousand, three hundred Canadian dollars ($1,456,300) and One million, two hundred and ninety seven thousand, eight hundred (1,297,800) euros.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is with a total value of one billion, one hundred and fifty seven million, six hundred and seventy thousand, four hundred and sixty nine Naira and ninety two kobo (N1,157, 670,469.92),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the same vein, operatives of NDLEA at the airport, had foiled attempt by drug traffickers to smuggle into the country,\u00a0 10.89 kilograms of cocaine, through a Qatar Airways flight.<\/p>\n<p>Babafemi said that the illicit drug was hidden in seven children duvets, packed in an unaccompanied bag from Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>He quoted the chairman of the NDLEA, retired Brig. Gen.
