Coronavirus infections are on the rise in Africa but are becoming less and less fatal, an Africa CDC official said on Thursday.<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n
\n

Countries experiencing their \u201cfifth wave\u201d of cases are seeing tallies spike higher than in their previous wave, said Ahmed Ogwell, deputy head of the pan-African health organisation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But the saving grace was that the number of deaths over a similar period was lower.<\/p>\n

South Africa in particular was responsible for the 38 per cent increase in COVID-19 infection numbers on the continent, he said.<\/p>\n

In contrast, deaths fell from 59 per cent during the same period.<\/p>\n

Across Africa, 11.4 million infections and about 252,000 deaths have been recorded so far since the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Experts say the number of unreported infections on the continent with its 1.3 billion people is likely to be high.<\/p>\n

Eleven countries on the continent<\/a> were currently in a fifth wave of infection, with Mauritius in its sixth, Ogwell said.<\/p>\n

Africa has now procured 784 million vaccine doses, but only about 17 per cent of the population in Africa has been fully vaccinated against the Coronavirus.<\/p>\n

Ogwell called for more vaccine doses to be purchased on the continent.<\/p>\n

Referring to reports of an impending closure of Aspen Pharmacare\u2019s manufacturing facility in South Africa due to lack of sufficient demand, he said; \u201cWe hope it doesn\u2019t come to that\u2026we have a market in Africa.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
