{"id":23183,"date":"2022-05-06T05:03:09","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T05:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=23183"},"modified":"2022-05-06T05:03:09","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T05:03:09","slug":"okebukola-tasks-lecturers-on-effective-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/06\/okebukola-tasks-lecturers-on-effective-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Okebukola tasks lecturers on effective teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\">\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Emeritus Prof. Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), says good practices by lecturers is a panacea for achieving academic excellence in universities across the country.<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Okebukola made the assertion on Thursday at the workshop for senior lecturers of Lagos State University (LASU), on revamping academic culture toward achieving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/05\/go-beyond-certificates-in-employing-teachers-organisation-advises-schools\/\">academic<\/a> excellence in the institution.<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged all academic staff of LASU to adopt the provisions of effective teaching, partnership and good practices among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLecturers in LASU should collaborate internally and externally among themselves in order to boost researches in the institution because LASU has about the best teachers in Nigeria\u2019s university system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniversity teaching is different from secondary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/05\/uzodimma-orders-renovation-of-schools-health-centres-in-imo\/\">school<\/a> teaching. According to survey, good practices in university teaching are reviewing previous lecture, present current and summarise the lesson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOthers includes: relating topic to sociocultural context, promptness to class, self evaluating\u00a0 his\/her lesson, dressing well, using technology to support teaching and good communication skills,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Okebukola, there are some antagonistic forces to good quality teaching which include indolent students and poorly resourced classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOthers are; poor welfare scheme and fairly long distances to travel from home to the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome bad practices in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/08\/uniosun-teaching-hospital-condemns-attack-on-staff-by-hoodlums\/\">university teaching<\/a> are spending more than half of the time on non-lesson related discussion, intimidating students, and lateness to class or not at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailure to cover the course syllabus, poor dressing to class, poor use of technology and variety of teaching approaches and poor feedback to students,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Michael Faborode, former Vice-Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife,\u00a0 also urged universities to exploit technology to the limit to transform their institutions, methods of teaching, learning and governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cICT is the fulcrum on which the various elements of the blueprint for revitalisation rest, hence universities must be ready to deploy for effective teaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy 2023, scholars in Nigerian universities should be among the top three in productivity as measured by national and global productivity standards to solve socioeconomic challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery nation needs their university sectors to apply and produce knowledgeable well skilled workers across the skills spectrum in order to be competitive in the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniversities must therefore be well funded and accorded needed recognition and in return to respond to crucial need that determines their local relevance and social value,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emeritus Prof. Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), says good practices by lecturers is a panacea for achieving academic excellence in universities across the country.
