{"id":23711,"date":"2022-05-09T15:59:27","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T15:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=23711"},"modified":"2022-05-09T15:59:27","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T15:59:27","slug":"residents-provided-50-of-who-blood-requirement-in-lagos-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/09\/residents-provided-50-of-who-blood-requirement-in-lagos-official\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents provided 50% of WHO blood requirement in Lagos \u2013 official"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"featured-image page-header-image-single grid-container grid-parent\">Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has revealed that the state provided about 50 per cent of the World Health Organisation\u2019s (WHO) estimated blood requirement in 2021.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The commissioner said this during the launching of the Corporate Organisation Blood Drive at the 159th World Red Cross Day (WRCD) celebration on Sunday in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/09\/red-cross-says-insecurity-bane-of-humanitarian-crisis-in-nigeria\/\"><strong>Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS)<\/strong><\/a>, Lagos Branch, with the theme: \u201c#BeHumanKIND.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The corporate organisation blood drive is a collaboration between the NRCS, Lagos Branch, and the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS).<\/p>\n<p>Represented by Dr Bodunrin Osikomaiya, Secretary, LSBTS, Abayomi said the initiative was borne out of the need to meet up the shortfall of blood in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe WHO had estimated that at least 200,000 pints of blood is needed to meet the need of Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe humanitarian projects are much desired as they are all channelled to improve lives of residents of the state and beyond,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Abayomi said the Red Cross would reach out to organisations to ensure they understood the reasons, benefits of blood donation and what should be done before donating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be done within the organisation\u2019s office spaces; if there\u2019s no space, we will take them to our blood mobile to collect and process the blood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThereafter, it will be distributed to blood banks in the state,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the Chairman of NRCS, Lagos Branch, Mrs Adebola Kolawole, said the initiative was targeted at corporate organisations to imbibe the culture of voluntary blood donations.<\/p>\n<p>Kolawole added that the initiative would enhance the total well being of the voluntary blood donors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will improve the Red Cross present performance in the area of saving lives through voluntary blood donation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has revealed that the state provided about 50 per cent of the World Health Organisation\u2019s (WHO) estimated blood requirement in 2021.
