{"id":23820,"date":"2022-05-10T11:51:02","date_gmt":"2022-05-10T11:51:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/?p=23820"},"modified":"2022-05-10T11:51:02","modified_gmt":"2022-05-10T11:51:02","slug":"fg-begins-rehabilitation-works-on-lagos-bridges-seeks-stakeholders-understanding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/10\/fg-begins-rehabilitation-works-on-lagos-bridges-seeks-stakeholders-understanding\/","title":{"rendered":"FG begins rehabilitation works on Lagos bridges, seeks stakeholders\u2019 understanding"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\" aria-label=\"Content\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">\u00a0The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, on Monday appealed for stakeholders\u2019 understanding over the discomfort they would experience during rehabilitation works on some bridges in Lagos State.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">Fashola made the appeal at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/05\/06\/2023-osinbajo-confers-with-apc-stakeholders-in-enugu\/\">stakeholders<\/a> meeting on comprehensive repair of Eko and Apongbon bridges, held at Ijora-Olopa, in Lagos.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Stakeholders in attendance include representatives of Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), transport companies, Apapa Local Government officials and traffic regulatory agencies.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Top officials of the Federal Ministry of Works, the Permanent Secretaries of the Lagos State Ministries of Environment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/01\/05\/fg-tasked-to-provide-free-transportation-for-senior-citizens\/\">Transportation<\/a> and Office of Infrastructure, alongside their directors, were also present.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Fashola, at the interactive session, said\u00a0that several portions of Eko Bridge became worn out due to years of neglect, hence the ongoing interventions.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The minister said that the federal government was tackling the problem holistically, and needed support of stakeholders for smooth operations.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe ministries and Local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/broadnews\/2022\/04\/20\/afdb-host-consultations-with-governments-to-promote-blueprint-equip-africas-workforce\/\">Government<\/a> need to help us create awareness for people to know that we all have roles to play during rehabilitation works.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe (Federal Government) know the problem, we know the solution, we have a plan but we need your support,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The minister appealed to representatives of the truck operators to encourage their members to build truck parks.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He urged them not to always resort to\u201dsubtle threats or blackmail\u201d each time issues of their excesses constituting public nuisance were pointed out.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Fashola said that the colossal damage to Apongbon Bridge was being addressed by the contractors on the project.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Managing Director, Buildwell Plants and Equipment Industries Ltd, Mr George Mhanna, gave a breakdown of the schedule for rehabilitation works on Eko and Apongbon bridges.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He said that the rehabilitation would be done in categories, prioritising the worst sections.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Earlier, making slide presentations, Mr Oluropo Oyetade, Director, Highways, Bridges and Design said 20 bearings had been changed on the 4.1km Eko Bridge.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The bridge, which links Lagos Mainland with Island, has 12 ramps.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe have 1,732 bridges nationwide, from which Lagos has 105 and fourth in ranking, after Taraba Niger and Cross River.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cOut of 105 bridges, we have intervened in 23, with 10 completed, 11 ongoing\u00a0 and two new contracts in 2022 budget. The new ones are Carter Bridge and Iganmu,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">He said that the first phase of emergency repair of Eko Bridge was carried out in June 2020, during which another set of defects were noticed.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">This, according to him, led to another contract award for Phase II in September 2020.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cAgain, more defects showed up\u00a0 and Honourable Minister now directed for a holistic review of the whole bridge.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThese took all Directors of Highways months to accomplish and culminated in award of Comprehensive Maintenance of Eko Bridge in February 2022,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Mr Olowoshago Kamal, represented Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">at the event.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He promised collaboration for speedy completion of the rehabilitation works.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Chairperson of Apapa Local Government, Mrs Idowu Senbanjo, said that<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">traders of a popular fish market and truck operators were insisting on remaining under the bridges and on roads.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">She said this was because of promises they claimed government made to them, \u00a0expressing concern on how to evict them.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Reports have it that Fashola had earlier gone round to see the situation under some bridges in Lagos Island.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">These include Eko, Apongbon, Obalende and Third Mainland bridges, where he sensitised traders, artisans and other encroachers on dangers of their operations.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He extended the evacuation ultimatum to the encroachers under the bridges till June 19, appealing that they comply voluntarily to avert use of force.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, on Monday appealed for stakeholders\u2019 understanding over the discomfort they would experience during rehabilitation works on some bridges in Lagos State.
