UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres on Monday welcomed the appointment of Mr Jens Wandel as acting chief of UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS).<\/p>\n

The office serves as the UN\u2019s operational arm, dedicated to implementing projects<\/a> for the Organisation, international financial institutions, governments and other partners around the world.<\/p>\n

The development came following the resignation of Executive Director, Ms Grete Faremo, on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been my great privilege to lead UNOPS. I continue to be proud of UNOPS\u2019 achievements and unprecedented growth over these last eight years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope my decision will allow UNOPS to focus on its vital work uplifting the lives of vulnerable people around the world,\u2019\u2019 Faremo said.<\/p>\n

In December, Faremo placed the Chief Executive of the UNOPS Sustainable Investments in Infrastructure and Innovation initiative on administrative<\/a> leave due to an investigation into possible misconduct.<\/p>\n

UNOPS eagerly awaits the outcome of the probe underway by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS).<\/p>\n

In a statement, UNOPS affirmed its commitment to working closely with the Secretary-General\u2019s office during the transition and said that it has already begun implementing continuity plans to ensure Faremo\u2019s departure would not affect regular project activities.<\/p>\n

While the Secretary-General launches a recruitment process \u2013 in consultation with the UNOPS Executive Board \u2013 to find a successor to Faremo, Wandel will take the reins, effective today.<\/p>\n

Most recently serving as the UN Special Adviser on Reforms, the acting UNOPS chief will be granted all the necessary support for a smooth transition.<\/p>\n

Prior to this appointment, he also served as the Secretary-General Designate for the COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund.<\/p>\n

Wandel has extensive experience working with international organisations<\/a> with a focus on management, adaptive change and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

He has also served as Director of the UN Development Programme Bureau for Management Services.<\/p>\n
